BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Immaculata University women's volleyball team got a game-high 14 kills from
Madi Curley Thursday night at Bryn Athyn, but the Macs could not overcome dropping the first two sets of the match, falling to the Owls 3-1.
Margaret Hawbaker produced four service aces in the effort, while
Olivia Zdradzinski assisted on 18 points for the Macs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET: BRYN MAWR 25, IU 23
-The Macs came out strong in the opening set to race out to an 8-3 lead, two of which came on Zradzinski kills.
-Following a Bryn Mawr timeout, the Owls cut the deficit to two at 9-7.
Natalie Dependahl responded with a kill and service ace to give the Macs another commanding lead, this time at 16-10.
-IU went on to hold the lead down the stretch, 23-19, but six unanswered Bryn Mawr points gave the Owls the 25-23 win.
SECOND SET: BRYN MAWR 30, IU 28
-IU responded with four straight points to open the second set thanks to Hawbaker's kill and a pair of service aces.
-The Owls drew even with the Macs at six-all, and the two sides traded the lead throughout the halfway point of the set. The Owls took control at 19-17, but kills from Belk and Dependahl paired with two Hawbaker service aces put the Macs back in control, 22-20.
-After another Bryn Mawr timeout, the Owls regained the lead at 24-23. The two sides alternated points but the Owls finished off the set with three unanswered points to take the second set, 30-28.
THIRD SET: IU 25, BRYN MAWR 17
-With their backs against the wall, the Macs got off to a quick 10-2 start that included a pair of Zdradzinski kills and a
Gerri Passalacqua service ace.
-IU continued to push forward and ran the lead up to 21-10 as Hawbaker amassed three kills over that stretch.
-Curley and Passalcqua finished off the third set with consecutive kills to take it 25-17.
FOURTH SET: BRYN MAWR 25, IU 19
-The Owls ripped off a 12-4 run in the early stages of the fourth set to take a 16-9 lead. The Macs threatened with three unanaswerd of their own, but would only score seven points the rest of the way as Bryn Mawr took the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-1.
TEAM COMPARISON
-Bryn Mawr produced more kills than IU on the night, 50-44.
-The Macs had seven service aces compared to the Owls' five.
-IU registered 74 digs in the contest in comparison to Bryn Mawr's 69.
-Both sides finished the match with a .173 hit percentage.
