LANGHORNE, Pa. - The Immaculata University women's volleyball team put together a total team effort Friday night at Cairn to down the Highlanders in straight sets, 3-0.
Sara Desmond led the Macs with 16 digs,
Olivia Zdradzinski pitched in eight kills and
Madi Curley assisted on 13 points in the effort.
The win marks the first of head coach
Rob Smith's collegiate head coaching career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET: IU, 25-20
-The Macs jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set, which included a
Natalie Dependahl ace.
-Cairn mounted a comeback to even the score at five-all, but IU responded with a 6-1 run to take a commanding 17-11 lead.
-Dependahl recorded back-to-back kills to extend the lead to seven late in the set, and
Madi Curley produced a kill and an ace to cap off the 25-20 win.
SECOND SET: IU, 25-23
-Cairn raced out to a 7-2 lead to open the second set, but the Macs stormed back with another 6-1 run to even the score at 11, forcing a Cairn timeout.
-The Macs faced another setback coming out of the timeout as the deficit went back up to four.
Gerri Passalacqua forced three consecutive attack errors to knot the set at 19.
-IU regained the lead with two-straight points on
Olivia Zdradzinski serves, and two
Shelby Belk kills in the final seven serves sealed the set for the Macs.
THIRD SET: IU, 25-22
-The third set was another close affair as both sides failed to extend their lead to greater than two points until the final serve.
-With the score knotted at 20, Cairn rattled off back-to-back points to take the lead but five consecutive points to end the match, four of which came off of Curley serves. Curley forced two attack errors while Passalacqua and Dependahl were credited with kills
TEAM COMPARISON
-Cairn held the advantage in kills, 27-26.
-IU served 12 aces opposite Cairn's seven.
-The Macs edged the Highlanders in blocks, 4-3.
-Both sides finished the night with 26 assists.
-IU outpaced Cairn in digs, 50-47.
