IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Immaculata University field hockey team put themselves in position to come away with a victory in its Atlantic East Conference debut Wednesday night, but a penalty stroke goal from visiting Neumann with under two minutes in regulation ultimately downed the Macs, 2-1.
Willa Thompson netted the game's first goal in the 54th minute - her fifth of the season - to lead the Mighty Macs offensively on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Mighty Macs were came out with a solid offensive gameplan in the first half, earning several opportunities on net thanks to seven penalty corners. The Macs finished the opening half with 11 shots while holding Neumann to just five.
-The two sides went into halftime scoreless, but Thompson put an end to that trend with her fifth goal of the season 23 minutes into the second half off of a penalty corner.
-Neumann responded eight minutes later when a loose ball was controlled at the top of the circle and sent in towards the net, landing in the top left corner of the cage after a couple deflections.
-With only 1:34 remaining in regulation, Neumann was awarded a penalty stroke and the Knights converted to come away with a 2-1 victory.
TEAM COMPARISON
-The Mighty Macs held the edge in shots, 22-10, as well as the shots on goal tally, 18-8.
-IU took 12 more penalty corners than Neumann in the game, finishing at a 14-2 clip.
