GWYNEDD VALLEY. Pa. - The Immaculata University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought game to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) leader Gwynedd Mercy Saturday afternoon, 95-89, despite a career-high 28 points from sophomore
Andre Allen off the bench. Allen's mark was also a game-high on the afternoon, but was not enough to combat a 53.1 percent (34-of-64) shooting day from the Griffins (13-2, 8-1 CSAC) on their home floor.
The loss moves the Macs to 4-5 in CSAC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Gwynedd Mercy came out of the gates with the hot hand, resulting in a 16-6 run over the first six minutes of the game.
-Three-pointers on consecutive IU possessions from Allen and
Matt Krewson cut the deficit to single digits, but the Griffins stretched their lead back out to 13 with just over ten minutes in the first half.
-The Macs continued their charge back, beginning with another Allen three and a
Mike Piekarski jumper to knock it down to a six-point game with six minutes remaining.
-The two sides traded buckets back-and-forth over the final four minutes, but a pair of Griffin threes at the end of the half resulted in an 11-point lead at the break.
-The Griffins came out of the half with even greater precision from the field, beginning the final 20 minutes of regulation with a 19-9 run to extend their lead to 21 at the 13-minute mark.
-Allen did all he could to get the Macs back in the game with 20 second-half points, seven of which coming in the final six minutes to make it an eight-point game with a minute to play.
-Allen finished the afternoon shooting 9-of-14 (64.3%) from the field, including 6-of-11 from three, to reach his game-high of 28 points.
KEY TEAM STATS
-The Macs shot 32-of-74 (43.2%) from the field, but the advantage went to Gwynedd Mercy with its 34-of-64 (53.1%) performance.
-IU shot 12-of-35 (34.3%) from beyond the arc opposite the Griffins' 13-of-31 (41.9%) day.
-Immaculata held the advantage from the charity stripe, converting on 13-of-15 (86.7%). Allen was a perfect 4-for-4 at the line.
-The Macs lost the battle on the boards, 39-33, but Ambrose and Piekarski each tied for the game-high with nine apeice.
-IU put together another explosive second-half performance with 56 points on 19-of-41 (46.3%) shooting. The Macs' 58 second-half points against Marywood a week ago tied the program record.
