IMMACULATA, Pa.- On Saturday afternoon the Mighty Mac field hockey team took on the Widener University Pride as both teams were looking to continue the momentum from their season opening victories and pick up a crucial second win in a row. The Macs (2-0) would ultimately prevail by a final score of 2-0 thanks to two late second half goals.
Widener controlled the pace for much of the first half and kept the ball out of their own end preventing the Macs from developing any queality chances. Senior goalie
Sarah Pasternak and company stood tall and managed to stop all eight corners and five shots that Widener took in the opening 35 minutes. This allowed the Macs to get to the locker room with the scored tied at 0-0.
Widener continued to control the tempo of the game in the second half as they held a major advantage in shots and corners with nine of each to the Macs five shots and two corners. However, the Macs managed to convert their limited opportunities as they scored their first goal off of a penalty corner in the 40
th minute from junior
Cayla Williams who took a pass from senior
Meredith Katona to give the Macs a 1-0 lead, and from that point they would never look back.
In the 60
th minute, the Macs put the game on ice with a goal from senior
Brittany Robertson after junior
Megan Donegan got on a breakaway and was saved before being putback by Robertson. Pasternak and company continued to provide stellar defense and got their second consecutive shutout to open the season. Pasternak would go on to the end the day with 11 saves.
The Macs next game is Thursday September 8
th at Moravian beginning at 4 pm. Their next home game will be next Saturday against Swarthmore at 12 pm.
