Field Hockey Takes First Loss Of Season Against Swarthmore

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa. - On a hot and humid Saturday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium, Immaculata University's field hockey squad's undefeated start to the season would unfortunately come to an end as visiting Swarthmore topped the Mighty Macs (3-1) by a final score of 5-0.

The heat was absolutely a factor as both teams were forced to turn to their benches with great regularity throughout the entire game in order to keep players healthy in the heat.

IU senior goalie Sarah Pasternak would ultimately see her scoreless streak come to an end in the eight minute of the contest when Swarthmore's (3-2) Clare Perez converted on a penalty corner from Jordyn Bell for the first goal of the game. The Garnet would score again on a penalty stroke from Kathleen Carmichael in the 11th minute. Sierra Spencer would score another goal in the 22nd minute, and Perez would score again in the 26th minute.

In the first half, the Macs played hard and the defense was tested as the Garnet had possession in Immaculata's zone for much of the half, and had a 14-2 advantage in shots. Pasternak did everything she could as she made seven saves in the half but it was not enough to stifle the Garnet.

The second half began in a very similar manner as the heat was intense, and the Garnet were still keeping the heat on the Macs defense. Pasternak and company did well making another three saves and limiting the Garnet's offense to just one late goal in the 68th minute by Spencer.

Immaculata created more offensive opportunities in the second half, outshooting Swarthmore, 7-2, as Brittany Robertson took three shots. The Mighty Macs also had six penalty corners.

The Garnet would use two goalies on the day as Zelda Blank made four saves, and Ellory Laning would come on for the final 10 minutes and make one save.

This loss ended the Macs winning streak at three games and ended Pasternak's scoreless streak at 218 minutes.

The Macs next game will be at home on Wednesday, Sept. 14, against Haverford beginning at 6:30 p.m.
