Volleyball Comes Up Short In Five-Setter With Ursinus

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University volleyball suffered its first home loss of the season Tuesday night as the Mighty Macs dropped a five-setter to visiting Ursinus College, 3-2. The Bears won the match by scores of 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 20-25 and 17-15.
 
Jamie Rombach was one of two Mighty Macs to reach double figures in kills with a team-best 14 kills. Rombach also made six digs and posted two blocks. Stephanie Johler recorded 10 kills, three service aces and two blocks. Gabrielle Guerrera and Marissa Casella were also strong at the net for Immaculata with four and three blocks, respectively.
 
Maranda Jones handed out 18 assists, while Brittany Thompson registered 15 assists and 13 digs for the double-double. Molly Truitt made a team-best 24 digs, and Emily Swank recorded 14 digs.
 
Trailing 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Immaculata fell behind early 6-2. The Mighty Macs were able to win five-straight points and take a 7-6 edge. Immaculata was not able to extend its advantage further than three points when leading, 14-11, Ursinus went on a four-point run to reclaim the lead (15-14). The two teams went back-and-forth with four tied scores, the last at 19-all. Immaculata regained a three-point lead (22-19) and after Ursinus scored its 20th point, the Mighty Macs closed out the set to take the match to a decisive fifth set with three points.
 
The Mighty Macs had the advantage in the fifth set until the Bears (9-4) squared things up at 11-11. Ursinus took its first lead of the set at 12-11, but Immaculata would answer with a point every time Ursinus went ahead by one. The Mighty Macs set up match-point at 14-13 forcing the Bears to call timeout. Ursinus came out of the stoppage winning two-straight points for its own match-point. However, the Mighty Macs were able to keep the match alive with a Rombach kill to make it 15-all. Ursinus won the side-out and then won the match on a Bears kill.
 
Immaculata (9-2) continues its home stand on Thursday night hosting Wesley at 7 p.m.
