Women's Soccer Drops 2014 Season Opener, 4-0

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Mighty Mac women's soccer team opened up their 2014 season at home at Draper Walsh Stadium on Friday night against Penn-State Abington (1-0) and the Nittany Lions took an early lead and never looked back as Immaculata fell 4-0.
 
The Nittany Lions applied pressure early and often as the Mighty Macs were back on their heels, but senior goalie Meghan McCurnin was up to the challenge and made five saves early in the game, including two diving stops. 
 
In the 21st minute, the Mighty Macs got a bad break as they committed a handball in the box which allowed Victoria Parker to convert a penalty kick for a 1-0 Nittany Lion lead.
 
Penn State-Abington tallied 14 shots in the first half, but the Mighty Macs surged late in the first half and had five shots, but were unable to break through to net the equalizer by half.
 
In the second half, the Mighty Macs again applied pressure, but Penn State added an insurance goal in the 65th minute as Kayla Nolan broke past the defense and put one into the lower corner for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Mighty Macs nearly cut into the lead again with a late rush with 12 minutes to go in the game when Kimesha Speller fed Carly Mirarchi, but her one time attempt sailed wide.
 
Barbara Stanley also had a good chance, but the Nittany Lion goaltender saved it to keep IU off the scoreboard.
 
Penn State-Abington added two more goals late to get to the final of 4-0.
 
McCurnin had a solid debut collecting nine saves and Mirarchi led the team with three shots on the game.
 
Immaculata will now go on the road on Wednesday with a road trip to Albright.
