Immaculata Tops Goucher 2-1 For First Win Of 2013

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata field hockey picked up their first win of the 2013 season in their home opener as they scored a 2-1 victory over visiting Goucher (0-3).  Junior Tiffany Lockfeld and sophomore Patsy Murphy were the goal scorers for Immaculata and freshman goalie Sarah Pasternak picked up her first career victory.
 
The Mighty Macs (1-1) got on the board first on the goal by Lockfeld in the 14th minute.  After junior Ashley O'Donnell earned a corner for Immaculata, the Mighty Macs took advantage of the opportunity.  O'Donnell controlled a pass from Lockfeld, who fed sophomore Lindsay Cras.  Cras took a shot that was saved by the goalie, but junior Natalie Rivera was there to give a perfect feed to Lockfeld for the Immaculata goal.  It was Lockfeld's first goal of the season and fourth point overall, while Rivera picked up her first assist of 2013.
 
After staving off some attacks by the Gophers, the Mighty Macs added an insurance goal to up their lead late in the first half.  In the 32nd minute, Immaculata had another penalty corner that turned into a goal as they converted on two of their three opportunities in the first half.  This time, sophomore Jamie Radetich took a shot that was blocked, but Murphy was there to pick up the rebound and put it in the back of the net for a 2-0 IU advantage.  The goal was Murphy's second of the season and it was Radetich's first career point.
 
Pasternak got her first career start in net and was impressive in the first half picking up six saves.
 
The Gophers cut the deficit in half midway through the second half when Justine Ruhlin deflected in a pass from Danielle Hallacker that beat freshman goalie Chrsitine McIntyre to make it 2-1 in the 50th minute.
 
From there, the Immaculata defense was stout as they kept Goucher off the scoreboard and held on for the 2-1 victory.
 
Immaculata will have another home non-conference game this Saturday when they host Moravian at 1 p.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium.
 
NOTES: Immaculata was 1-5 last season when scoring two goals or more in a game … The Mighty Macs avenged a 1-0 road loss to Goucher from September 5th, 2012 … The non-conference victory is Immaculata's first since October 20th, 2011 when they topped Wilson by a score of 3-0.
