Women's Soccer Dominates 5-0 In CSAC Opener

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata women's soccer opened Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play with a dominant 5-0 victory over visiting Baptist Bible (1-5, 0-1 CSAC) on Saturday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium.  Freshman Rachel Lamb led the Mighty Macs with two goals, her first multi-game of her career, while freshman Paulina Rucci, freshman Emma Koontz, and junior Rachel Gannon added one goal a piece in a strong effort by Immaculata (2-6, 1-0 CSAC).
 
The Mighty Macs outshot the Defenders 27-7, and after scoring just once in the first half, they finished the game strong with four goals in the final 45 minutes of play.
 
The Mighty Macs controlled the pace of the game early and had several early chances off the foot of freshman Shelby Clare and junior Rachel Gannon, but were stopped each time.
 
Immaculata finally broke through in the 14th minute when Rucci scored her first career goal with a low left-footed shot from just outside the box that found the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 IU lead.  Freshman Shelby Clare provided her first of two assists on the afternoon.
 
The Mighty Macs were in control the entire first half compiling seven shots on goal, including a shot from just outside of the box by junior Barbara Stanley after a Defender foul, but her shot sailed high as Immaculata held a 1-0 at halftime.
 
Immaculata extended their advantage to 2-0 in the 52nd minute as Lamb scored her second career goal after hitting in a shot off the post from freshman Carly Mirarchi, who earned her first career assist.
 
The offensive pressure by the Mighty Macs resulted in another goal in the 61st minute as Koontz lofted a high shot from more than 20 yards away that just cleared the goalkeeper's hand and snuck under the crossbar for a 3-0 IU lead.  The goal was the first of her career as well.
 
Gannon scored her team-leading third goal of the season in the 69th minute after she knocked in a rebound of Mirarchi's blocked shot for a 4-0 Mighty Mac lead.  It was Mirarchi's second assist of the afternoon.
 
Shortly after, Lamb tied Gannon for the team-lead in goals in the 80th minute with a low shot to the far post and the fifth goal of the game for the Mighty Macs.  Freshman Shannon Lewis earned her first career assist on Lamb's second goal of the day.
 
Junior goalie Meghan McCurnin (four saves) earned her ninth career victory and preserved the fourth shutout of her career with a late save as the Mighty Macs finished off the 5-0 CSAC-opening win.
 
Immaculata will now host Notre Dame on Wednesday at 4 p.m. searching for their second consecutive CSAC win to open conference play.
 
NOTES: McCurnin moves into fourth on the career list in shutouts with four … The five goals scored are the most for the Mighty Macs since September 21st, 2011 when they topped Rosemont 7-1.
