IMMACULATA, Pa.- Immaculata hosted Gwynedd Mercy in the regular season finale for both teams, and the Griffins (10-7, 6-1 CSAC) came away with a 3-0 victory, but the Mighty Macs (6-12, 4-3 CSAC) clinched the no. 3 seed in the CSAC playoffs by virtue of tiebreakers over Keystone and Neumann. Today also marked Senior Day for
Anna Gilbert and
Molly Byrne, who were honored before the game.
The Griffins scored the first goal of the game in the 14
th minute when Brittany Wilson ripped a shot that freshman goalie
Christine McIntyre saved, but Wilson got the rebound at the top of the circle and shot again, this time beating McIntyre for a 1-0 Gwynedd Mercy lead.
The Mighty Macs were in danger of falling into a 2-0 hole midway through the first half as Maria Karidas had a penalty stroke attempt, but McIntyre stood tall and knocked the shot away with her stick to keep the Griffin lead at 1-0.
However, the Griffins broke through again in the 29
th minute as Stephanie Bacho deflected a pass in from Cristen Pody for a 2-0 lead that they would take into the locker room.
The Mighty Macs generated their best opportunities of the half in the final two minutes as they had four shots, with two on net, but were unable to cut into the lead.
McIntyre played well in the first half picking up seven saves.
The Mighty Macs continued the offensive pressure again in the second half as junior Ashley O'Donnell had a great chance rushing up the field, but a defensive save by the Griffins kept Immaculata off the scoreboard.
Gwynedd would add another goal in the 47
th minute on a tally by the conference's leading scorer Maria Karidas, who beat freshman goalie
Sarah Pasternak (four saves).
O'Donnell again had a great opportunity in the 54
th minute on a penalty stroke after junior
Natalie Rivera was taken down in the circle, but her attempt was denied by Gwynedd keeper Kelly Kruk.
These two teams will face off again one week from today as the third-seeded Mighty Macs will travel to the second-seeded Griffins in the CSAC semifinals. The playoff appearance will be the fifth for Immaculata in the last six years after missing out in 2012.
