CHESTER, Pa.- Immaculata University's field hockey squad opened the 2011 season falling to host Widener, 2-0, Thursday night. at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Widener (1-0) opened the scoring at the 17 minute mark with a goal from Devon Biglin to take an early lead. Immaculata's defense settled in and managed to slow down Widener's attack late in the first half.
The Mighty Macs also generated some quality scoring chances totaling nine shots on goals compared to Wideners seven. However, Widener goalkeeper Maggie Karmeris made a total of eight saves to preserve the shutout.
The Pride ended the scoring in the 59th minute as Colleen Cormier converted off
Kate Fay's second assist of the contest.
Freshman Tiffany Lockfield and juniors
Mary Beth Plastek and
Katie Becker registered two shots each for the Mighty Macs. Senior Brittany Worthington started the contest in goal totaling one save while freshman
Natalie Slezak finished the contest and also recorded one save in the loss.
Immaculata faces Fairleigh Dickinson University at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Black-Eyed Susan Tournament being held at Stevenson University.
