Field Hockey On Wrong End Of Opener To Widener

IMMACULATA, Pa.
– Immaculata University's field hockey squad started off the season with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Widener University on Wednesday evening.

After holding the Pride (1-0) off for the first 20 minutes, Widener's Colleen Cormier took a pass from Samantha Balonis and buried the ball in the goal for the early 1-0 lead at the 20:48 mark. The Pride scored just under 10 minutes later as Kate Erkoboni pushed one over the line, and Widener went into intermission leading 2-0.

Widener secured one more goal in the 43rd minute and tagged on two more in the final 10 minutes of play.

Immaculata (0-1) starting goalkeeper Jess Jones made 11 saves and allowed two goals during 39 minutes and Britt Worthington recorded three stops over the first 30 minutes of the second half. Widener starting keeper Megan Purcell recorded just one save in 61 minutes to get the win in goal.

The Pride held advantages over the Mighty Macs in both shots (24-4) and penalty corners (16-1).

Immaculata will be in search of a win when it travels to Swarthmore on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
