Field Hockey Defeats Cedar Crest, Advances To CSAC Tournament

ALLENTOWN, Pa.
- Immaculata University pulled out its second straight overtime victory Monday afternoon, as the Mighty Macs' field hockey defeated Cedar Crest College, 2-1, to advance to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament.

Immaculata improves to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the CSAC. The Mighty Macs advance to the conference postseason tournament for the second consecutive season as the No. 6 seed. Cedar Crest ends the season with a 5-12 overall and 2-6 league mark.

With the winner of the contest advancing to the league playoffs, it was a battle from the start with both teams leaving everything on the field.

Host Cedar Crest got on the board first as Tammy Gruzdis tipped in a pass from Ashley Jennings at the 16:20 mark of the first half, as the Falcons' took the 1-0 lead. 

Maureen Town got the Mighty Macs on the board went she went on a one-on-one fast-break with Cedar Crest's goalkeeper to score at the 24:19 mark, evening the score, 1-1.

Both teams would play to a standstill the rest of the way, forcing the contest into overtime. Cedar Crest held a slight 12-10 shot advantage, and a 6-5 edge in penalty corners during regulation.

Just 5:59 into the overtime period, Immaculata's Emily Hallett took a feed from Katherine Becker and put the ball in the back of the cage, propelling the Mighty Macs to victory.

Immaculata goalkeeper Britt Worthington registered nine saves during the contest to record the win. Cedar Crest goalie Rachel Orlen also made nine saves, including a save on a penalty stroke in overtime.

Immaculata finished the contest with a 14-13 advantage in shots, while Cedar Crest held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. 

Immaculata will travel to No. 3 seed Neumann on Saturday, Oct. 31 for CSAC quarterfinal action. The time has not yet been determined.
