Wayne McKinney, a 14-year veteran of college coaching, including 12 seasons as a head coach, begins his third season as the head women’s soccer at Immaculata University in 2011.
During his first campaign in 2009, McKinney helped guide the Mighty Macs to a 9-7-3 overall and 6-3-1 CSAC record, and reached the CSAC playoffs as the fifth seed. In 2010, Immaculata advanced to the conference title game for the first time in program history finishing the season as the CSAC runner-up.
McKinney mentored his first All-CSAC First Team selection during 2010 when Jessica Gaburo earned recognition as goalkeeper. Gaburo was also a first team selection in 2008 and was named to the second team during both the 2009 and 2007 campaigns.
McKinney also guided Kim Steinke to two consecutive all-league accolades, after the senior midfielder was selected to the second team in 2010 and was an honorable mention all-conference choice in 2009.
McKinney inherited a women’s program that had earned its first postseason conference tournament appearance in program history in 2008.
McKinney was no stranger to the Immaculata sidelines after serving as an assistant coach for the Mighty Macs’ men’s soccer program during 2007 and 2008. In 2008, McKinney helped guide Immaculata to the CSAC tournament semifinals.
Prior to his arrival at Immaculata, McKinney most recently had guided the Ursinus College men’s soccer year for four seasons from 2003 through 2006. He earned his first collegiate head coaching position in 1991 when he accepted the top job at Swarthmore College with the men’s soccer program, where he served as the Garnet’s mentor for six seasons. During his first campaign at Swarthmore, the Garnet reached the 1991 NCAA Division III Tournament.
McKinney began his coaching career in 1984 as the ninth-grade coach at Strath Haven High School. Overall, McKinney has 13 years of experience coaching high school soccer at Strath Haven, Sun Valley and Malvern Prep School.
McKinney has also dabbled in the professional coaching ranks as an assistant coach with the South Jersey Barons of the USL Professional League from 1997 to 1998. He later coached the Delaware Wizards during the 2000 campaign.
A recognizable figure in southeastern Pennsylvania soccer, McKinney has guided the Vincent United U-13 and U-15 girl’s soccer club since 2005. He has also coached the Eastern Pennsylvania Olympic Development Program boy’s team since 1989, leading them to the Olympic Development Program national championship in 2002.
McKinney received his bachelor’s degree from Millersville University, where he was a member of the soccer team.
