Rob Smith enters his fourth season as the head coach for Immaculata men's and women's volleyball. Smith is the 13th head coach chosen to lead the women and was selected to lead the men's team when it started varsity competition in January 2019.
Smith entered his third season at the helm of women’s volleyball team and his second season as head coach of the men’s volleyball team in the 2021 season. The men’s team had a record of 0-10. The women’s team had a final record of 0-2 after both a fall to Neumann University and Cedar Crest College.
Following a winless inaugural season on the men's side, Smith helped the Macs improve to 2-10 during a shortened season. The Macs picked up their first win with a 3-0 victory over Lehman (2/1) as Immaculata also earned its first Continental Volleyball Conference win with a 3-1 defeat of Neumann (2/14). In the victory over Neumann, Smith oversaw the programs first triple-double as Garrett Pepper registered 10 kills, 18 assists and 19 digs. Following the shortened season, Immaculata also earned it's first all-conference member on the men's side when John Bohrer was tabbed to the CVC second team.
Smith completed his first season with the women's volleyball program in the fall of 2018, compiling a 5-17 record and qualifying for the inaugural Atlantic East Conference tournament. Smith notched his first career win as a head coach in the season-opener at Cairn (8/31), and also led the Mighty Macs to the program's first-ever Atlantic East victory over Gwynedd Mercy (10/24) to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.
The Macs compiled another 5-17 record in 2019 during Smith's second season while improving in several statistical categories. Immaculata finished second in the Atlantic East in opponents hitting percentage (.160) and also led the league in opponents assists per game (8.42). Under Smith's tutelage Natalie Dependahl ranked eighth in the Atlantic East with 2.39 kills per set while McKenna Ryan ranked sixth in the conference with 4.07 digs per set.
Smith comes to Immaculata with a wealth of coaching experience, spending the previous six years as the head girls volleyball coach at Sparks Volleyball Club in West Chester, Pa. He also serves the co-director and head coach of the Sparks Volleyball Beach Volleyball Club, and has coached girls aged 13 through 18 during his tenure.
During his time with Sparks, Smith also spent four seasons as the head girls volleyball coach at Kennett High School (2013-16) and as a court coach and player evaluator with USAV High Performance in 2015.
Smith earned his Level III AAU Positive Positive Coaching Alliance and Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) II certifications in 2017, and is USAV Indoor and Beach IMPACT certified. Additionally, on the officiating side, Smith is a Professional Association of Volleyball Officials (PAVO) and PIAA certified official and has spent the last two years officiating both NCAA men's and women's matches.
Smith hsd been a member of USA Volleyball since 1995 and played for the men's club team at West Chester University for three seasons.
