Women’s Volleyball Earns a Split in Final Day at DeSales Invitational

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Immaculata women's volleyball took on the DeSales University Bulldogs and Penn College Wildcats on Saturday to finish the DeSales Invitational. While the Mighty Macs lost to DeSales 3-0, they bounced back in a 3-0 win over Penn College.

The Mighty Macs are 2-2 for the season. Their first AEC match will be on Saturday, Oct. 17 versus Saint Elizabeth.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST DESALES
  • Down 7-5 in the first set, Immaculata used a 7-2 run to take back the lead at 12-9, capped off by a DeSales attack error. However, the Bulldogs scored 11 points in a 12-point sequence to take control of the set. The lone point in the stretch was an Eliana Szatkowski kill. Consecutive kills by Antonia Antolini were not enough, as DeSales won 25-22.
  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead in the second set. The Mighty Macs took advantage of a few home team errors, but DeSales grabbed set two 25-10.
  • Unlike the second set, Immaculata set the tone in the final frame. First-years Madi Kyle and Tara Hirschtritt tallied kills early on. As the set continued, DeSales slowly began to separate themselves, despite more offensive production from Kyle and Hirschtritt. A 5-1 run ended the match for the home team. DeSales took the set 25-19, and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mel Mann and Kyle tied the team-best of six kills each.
  • Hirschtritt logged 10 assists.
  • Adriana Ventura and Hirschtritt had nine digs apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PENN COLLEGE
  • Immaculata dominated the opening minutes with an impressive 13-1 explosion. Ventura saw two aces in the run. Although the Wildcats' offense began to stack points on the board, the Mighty Macs never lost control. A Hirschtritt ace sealed the set 25-15.
  • The Mighty Macs were temporarily down in the first parts of set two before a 6-1 push got them back in front. The two sides took turns on unanswered runs, but a couple of Penn College errors helped propel the Mighty Macs to a 25-22 victory.
  • The third set was relatively even until the middle, where another 6-1 run gave Immaculata breathing room. A Hirschtritt kill and a Wildcats error were the final two points of the afternoon, as Immaculata won set three 25-15. The Mighty Macs swept the Wildcats 3-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Hirschtritt logged 12 kills.
  • Angelica Santini Bulerin put up 17 assists.
  • Ventura had eight digs and three aces, the former of which tied Santini Bulerin.
