Tronosky Walks off Marywood Pacers in Game 2, as Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata baseball earned a conference series win on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of the Marywood University Pacers. They won Game 1, 4-0, and Game 2, 9-8, in a thrilling comeback.

The Mighty Macs are 15-18 for the season. They are 10-5 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARYWOOD – GAME 1
  • Both offenses were quiet early on, continuing the pitching duals from yesterday's game at Marywood. The Mighty Macs ended the top of the second on a defensive double play. With bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, a Josh Goulburn two-run single broke the scoreless tie. Matt Passerini added a run on the next play with a single. Robert Woodward would score on a defensive error. Luke Hardnock increased the Pacers' deficit in the third on a fielder's choice with bases loaded. It was 4-0 after three.
  • Immaculata's defense kept up their strong play with a pick-off to end the fourth. In the fifth, the Mighty Macs logged a batter's interference and caught a runner stealing for a double play. Despite both offenses not being able to bring runners home, Immaculata sustained their lead. An unassisted groundout to Passerini was the finale of Game 1, with the Mighty Macs winning 4-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – GAME 1
  • JT Luther led with two runs.
  • Goulburn had two hits and two RBIs.
  • Thomas DeSarno went all seven innings on the hill with three strikeouts, and he only allowed three hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARYWOOD – GAME 2
  • The Mighty Macs put runners on base in the first inning, yet they were unable to capitalize. The two sides traded runs in the second. Down 1-0, Immaculata jumped ahead on RBIs from Alex Tronosky and Passerini. Marywood reclaimed the advantage in the third on back-to-back plays. The Pacers put two more on the board in the fourth to extend the advantage to three runs. Although the Mighty Macs earned a single in the fourth, the side was retired moments later. The Pacers led 5-2 through four.
  • The Pacers' offense continued to score in the fifth and sixth. Both teams went three up, three down in the seventh with good defense. Logan Barndt, subbing in off the bench, recorded an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth that brought Luther home. A 1-6-3 double play in the top of the ninth set the stage for the bottom of the inning. A single from Danny Nocito, and three consecutive walks allowed by Marywood's pitching staff, cut the deficit to four with bases loaded. Following a Pacers' pitching change, Nick Turnage hit a two-run single up the middle to make the score 8-6. Two batters later, Tronosky stepped to the plate and walked off the game with a bases-clearing triple. Immaculata won Game 2 9-8 and swept the afternoon.
