Baseball Suffers Heartbreak Late Against Marywood Pacers

SCRANTON, Pa. – Immaculata baseball was in a scoreless draw with the Marywood University Pacers for most of Thursday afternoon. The Pacers slipped past the Mighty Macs in the seventh and eighth for the win.

The Mighty Macs are 13-18 for the season. They are 8-5 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARYWOOD
  • Immaculata put two men on base to start the day, but they were unable to bring them home. Both pitchers were locked in a pitching dual, not allowing any runs to score. Alex LePage eliminated the final batter of the second inning on a swinging strikeout. With a Marywood runner on first in the third inning, Matt Passerini turned a double play by himself on a lineout. This kept the score 0-0 through three.
  • Both offenses continued to struggle against the strong pitching. Although Immaculata would put a runner on second in the fifth, it came at the cost of a runner at third being picked off. With two outs in the sixth, a Marywood single earned them a baserunner. The Mighty Macs retired the next batter on an unassisted play at second. It was still scoreless after six.
  • Immaculata nearly had a man at third in the seventh, but the Pacers recorded an out on a steal attempt. Marywood broke the draw in the bottom of the inning on an error before going down on a fielder's choice. Despite two outs in the bottom of the eighth for Immaculata's defense, the home team added to their lead on an RBI single. Immaculata went three up, three down in the ninth, as Marywood won 2-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Passerini and Josh Goulburn each logged two hits.
  • Hunter Weitzel earned a walk.
  • LePage, despite the loss, pitched seven innings and retired five batters. He threw 126 pitches and only allowed one earned run.
