Softball Battles Hard in Defeat to Eastern Eagles

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata softball fell in a hard-fought doubleheader on Tuesday to the Eastern University Eagles. Eastern is currently receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) top 25 poll. Game one was a 4-0 decision, while game two was a 3-1 final.

The Mighty Macs are 7-11 for the season. They are 1-3 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN – GAME 1
  • The opening three innings were a defensive battle for both sides. Immaculata's defense prevented a run in the second, despite a double. An Eagles runner tried to round third and head home, but she was out at the latter. The Immaculata offense was unable to place a runner on base. Eastern's pitcher threw 16 strikeouts for the afternoon, with nine coming in the initial three innings. It was scoreless through three.
  • The Eagles sealed the game in the fourth with four runs. Even with an error that brought in two runs, Immaculata caught the Eastern batter as she went to second. Carlee Karcher gave the Mighty Macs life on offense in the bottom of the fifth with a single. Natalia Donofrio, who was pinch running for Karcher, would get to third, but a strikeout ended the inning. The game closed on a lineout to the pitcher. Eastern won 4-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – GAME 1
  • Karcher was responsible for the lone Mighty Macs hit.
  • Sara Pierson went all seven innings on the mound with two strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN – GAME 2
  • An RBI groundout put the Eagles on the board in the first inning. The Mighty Macs tied the game in the second on an error. Emma Pinto reached first, while Karcher scored. Each side only made it to three batters in the third. The score was tied 1-1.
  • The defensive battle continued from game one. Although Immaculata committed a fielding error in the top of the fifth, they would get a runner out at third on the same play to retire the side. Immaculata turned a double play in the sixth to segue into their offensive drive, but the drive was unsuccessful. The Eagles, down to one more out in the top of the seventh, loaded the bases. Despite good Immaculata defense, a two-RBI single was the difference. Eastern won game two 3-1.
