Karcher Gets 100th Career Hit, Gigante Walks off Cyclones in Split against Centenary

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata softball earned a split with the Centenary University Cyclones on Thursday. Centenary won 6-4 in game one, but Immaculata won 8-7 in game two on a walk-off wild pitch, which scored Carmalina Gigante.

Carlee Karcher also earned her 100th career hit on Thursday.

The Mighty Macs are 8-12 for the season. They are 2-4 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CENTENARY (N.J.) – GAME 1
  • Centenary began the day with an RBI single in the first inning. The Mighty Macs made a stop on defense in the second with a runner on third, but they were unable to capitalize offensively. The Cyclones added two more runs in the third. It was 3-0 after three.
  • Nadia Bhuiyan stepped into the circle in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Karcher put Immaculata on the board with a two-RBI double. Centenary countered with a two-RBI single in the fifth to increase the lead to three. Immaculata pulled to within one run in the sixth after Alexis Andrada reached on a fielder's choice and Kaelin Kuester reached on an error. However, the Cyclones put the game away in the seventh. The Cyclones retired the Mighty Macs in three straight batters, and they won game one 6-4.

  • Jamie Green had two runs.
  • Karcher logged three hits and two RBIs.
  • Sara Pierson started three innings and struck out a batter.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CENTENARY (N.J.) – GAME 2
  • After a quick top of the first from Centenary, the Mighty Macs' offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Four out of the five scoring plays were on doubles, while one was on an RBI triple. The first three scoring plays were consecutive. Immaculata's defense tightened in the second with three straight outs, despite runners on second and third. Both sides traded runs in the next few half-innings, with Immaculata's coming on an Emily Davis run on an error and a Casey Pasco score. Pasco stole second, advanced to third on an error, and then came home. Immaculata led 7-1 through three.
  • The Cyclones were close to tying the game in the fourth with five runs in four consecutive at-bats. Both teams were quiet until the sixth inning. Centenary tied the contest on an RBI bunt, and the batter also advanced to second. A knotted score through the top of the seventh set the scene for the bottom of the inning. Kuester and Pasco both singled, and Rukudzo Taruwinga reached on a fielder's choice. Gigante, who was on third, ended the game on a walk-off wild pitch. Immaculata claimed game two 8-7 and split the afternoon with Centenary.

  • Davis scored two runs.
  • Green, Karcher, Emma Pinto, and Kuester each had two hits.
  • Five different players registered an RBI.
  • Jessica Vido went four innings on the hill with one strikeout.
