Men's Volleyball Earns Come-from-Behind Win over Gallaudet Bison

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata men's volleyball, down 2-1 on Tuesday, outscored the Gallaudet University Bison 40-23 in the last two sets to grab a 3-2 win.

The Mighty Macs are 2-3 for the season. They are 1-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST GALLAUDET
  • The Bison placed themselves on the board early and often, but kills by Noah Zunski and Nate Bailey helped trim the deficit. The two sides went back-and-forth multiple times. Even with Immaculata down four on a Gallaudet attack error, the visitors finished the set with a 25-19 win.
  • Immaculata pounced early in the second set, going up 8-4 on multiple kills and an Anthony Fitch service ace. The Bison's offense got them back in the set, and they would tie it at 11. A 5-2 Mighty Macs push, though, was the difference. Two Gallaudet errors provided Immaculata with the last two points they needed to grab a 25-22 set two victory.
  • Zunski and Josh McGurl registered kills to begin the third frame. Despite an Immaculata third-point lead, the visitors scored seven of eight points to swing momentum in their favor. Immaculata battled their way back to get the deficit to four. However, the Bison logged one more kill to take set three 25-20.
  • Neither side was too far ahead of the other in the opening stages of set four. Tied 5-5, a 9-1 Immaculata outburst provided them with a comfortable margin. McGurl saw three kills in that run. The Mighty Macs maintained their advantage throughout the set, with four of the final five points going their way. Immaculata won the set 25-14, and they forced a fifth, winner-take-all set.
  • Gallaudet jumped out to a 3-1 advantage before Immaculata tied the set 5-5. A 5-1 run put them up 10-6, forcing a Bison timeout. The Mighty Macs held on to their lead, with McGurl ending the night on a kill on a Luke Dortenzo dime. The Mighty Macs won the set 15-9, and the match 3-2.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • McGurl recorded a team-high 21 kills.
  • Dortenzo had 37 assists and three aces, the former of which is a career-high.
  • Zunski logged a double-double of 15 kills and 12 digs.
