IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata baseball split their Saturday doubleheader with the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins. The Griffins won 17-3 in game one, but
Stephen Devanney's pitching in game two propelled Immaculata to a 7-1 bounce back.
The Mighty Macs are 6-12 for the season. They are 3-3 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST GWYNEDD MERCY – GAME 1
- Immaculata had early momentum in the first with bases loaded, but they were unable to capitalize. Although the Griffins' offense scored seven runs between the second and third innings, the Mighty Macs earned one each in those innings. Matt Passerini knocked in an RBI single, and JT Luther came home on a passed ball. A dropped third strike ended the inning, with Gwynedd Mercy leading 7-2 through three.
- Both teams were quiet until a Danny Nocito home run in the bottom of the fifth cut into the deficit. However, the Griffins answered with 10 runs across the sixth and seventh innings. Even though the Mighty Macs had a runner on base in the seventh inning, a pop-out retired the side. Gwynedd Mercy took game one 17-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – GAME 1
- Nocito, Luther, and Nick Turnage each had one run.
- Nocito and Turnage logged two hits each.
- One RBI went to Nocito and Passerini.
- Alex LePage went four innings on the mound and struck out four batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST GWYNEDD MERCY – GAME 2
- Both teams' defenses were on display in the opening innings of game two. The Griffins retired the Mighty Macs in back-to-back innings on double plays. However, Immaculata saw two runs in the third to break the scoreless tie. Passerini had a sac-fly, while Hunter Weitzel logged an RBI single. It was 2-0 after three.
- The Mighty Macs had their best inning of the day in the bottom of the fourth. They scored four runs, capped off by a Nocito three-RBI double down the left-field line. The Griffins countered with an RBI single in the top of the fifth. The Mighty Macs added an insurance run in the sixth, thanks to a Weitzel RBI single. The Mighty Macs led 7-1 through six.
- Immaculata kept Gwynedd Mercy off the board in the eighth inning with a double play. Logan Barndt advanced to second in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch, but the Griffins did not allow him to score. Sal Marziani pitched the ninth inning to close out the afternoon. On his final two batters, he registered consecutive strikeouts. Immaculata won 7-1, and the series 2-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS – GAME 2
- Barndt earned three runs.
- Nocito, Weitzel, and Turnage each had two hits.
- Nocito also logged three RBIs.
- Devanney got the win on the hill in 6.2 innings. He recorded three strikeouts.
