IMMACULATA, Pa. - Immaculata Athletics completed an eight-hour workshop on Thursday on Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), a program run by the National Council of Mental Health Well-Being, and endorsed by the NCAA.
Completing MHFA training equips coaches and staff with the skills to recognize early signs of mental health challenges and how to respond appropriately. In the Division III environment, where close relationships and frequently daily interactions are central, MHFA strengthens Immaculata Athletics' ability to support our student-athletes holistically, both in and out of competition.
"Our athletic department recognizes that true strength extends beyond the physical realm," Director of Athletics and Recreation
Paul Murphy said. "By equipping our coaches and staff with the knowledge to recognize and address student-athlete mental health concerns, we are building healthier, more-resilient individuals, preparing them for success long after their playing career is completed."
"Coaches often serve as the first line of support, and this training gave our department practical tools grounded in empathy and confidence to recognize, respond to, and support the mental well-being of our student-athletes," Assistant Athletic Director for NCAA Compliance and Student Success
Beth Bernabeo said.
The training promotes early intervention, reduces stigma around mental health, and helps create a safer, more-supportive culture aligned with student well-being and personal development.
