Baseball Rallies and Holds on to Defeat Centenary to Stay Alive in AEC Tournament

WINCHESTER, Va.- Trailing 5-1 after three innings, the Immaculata baseball team rallied and held on defeat Centenary 9-7 to stay alive in the Atlantic East Conference tournament on Friday afternoon. Matt Passerini, Steven Theisen, and Ryan Nace each had two RBIs, and Alex LePage earned his seventh win of the season going 7.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs, and had three strikeouts. Steven Devanney earned the save with 1.1 innings of scoreless in relief.

How it Happened
  • Immaculata took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Sal Serici RBI single infield single that scored Matt Passerini.
  • Centenary took scored runs in the bottom of the first inning and the bottom of the second inning taking advantage of Immaculata errors to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Centenary extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs, with two of those runs being unearned due to errors.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, Ryan Struble scored on a wild pitch. Steven Theisen hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Will Kelley, and Ryan Nace followed with a two-run single that scored Matt Passerini and Maddox Stern to tie the score at 5-5.
  • Immaculata took the lead in the top of the sixth with and RBI single by Matt Passerini that scored Maddox Stern, and an RBI single to right field by Steven Theisen that scored Robert Woodward to give Immaculata a 7-5 lead.
  • Immaculata extended their lead to 8-5, on an RBI triple by Matt Passerini that scored Robert Woodward.
  • Centenary scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the Immaculata lead to 8-7.
  • Centenary got their first two runners to reach base in the bottom of the eighth inning. Stephen Devanney came in to pitch in relief of Alex LePage and was able to get out of the inning to keep the score 8-7.
  • Immaculata added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a two out RBI single by Nick Turnage to give Immaculata a 9-7 lead.
  • Centenary got their first two hitters on in the ninth. They advanced them to second and third on a sacrifice bunt to put two in scoring position with one out. Stephen Devanney got the second out on flyout to short right field and got the final out on a ground out to third to close out the 9-7 win for Immaculata.
