Softball Comes From Behind to Earn Doubleheader Split at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.- The Immaculata softball team came from behind to defeat Ursinus 5-4 in eight innings in the second game of their doubleheader to earn a split and snap their four-game slide. In the top of the eighth inning Jess Oldham hit into a fielder's choice, which scored Bryele Anthony with the go ahead run. Immaculata added another run on an error by the shortstop to take a 5-3 lead. After allowing a run in the top of the eighth, Riece Onorato induced a pop out to shortstop, struck out the next batter swinging, and included the final out on foul out to first base to close out the 5-4 victory for the Mighty Macs.

With today's split, Immaculata improves to 7-7 overall, and Ursinus moves to 10-9 overall.

Game One:  Ursinus 13, Immaculata 4 (5 innings)

How it Happened
  • Ursinus jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on an error in the outfield.
  • Ursinus extended their lead to 7-0, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
  •  Immaculata got on the board in the top of the third inning, when Bryele Anthony singled to right field. The right fielder had a throwing error on the play that allowed Anthony to reach third and scored Kate Daly with Immaculata's first run.
  • Immaculata closed the score to 8-4 in the top of the fifth inning. Steph Kelly got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Jess Oldham cleared the bases with a double to center field.
  • Ursinus took advantage of another outfield error by Immaculata, scoring five runs to end the game winning 13-4 in five innings on a two run double.

How it Happened
  • Ursinus scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning with a single and a double to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Immaculata got on the board in the top of the second inning when Bryele Anthony grounded out to first base scoring Lily Hagen who led off the inning with a single to cut the Ursinus lead to 2-1.
  • Immaculata tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Jess Oldham hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Isabella Pastella.
  • Ursinus took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double to left field to take a 3-2 lead.
  • In the top of the sixth, Maddy Formica and Bryele Anthony each singled with one out. Kate Daly reached on a fielder's choice when Formica was forced out at third base. With two outs, Bryele Anthony stole third base, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to tie the score at 3-3.
  • Both teams got runners on board but were unable to score in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Maddy Formica started at second base. Bryele Anthony reached on a fielder's choice. Formica was caught in a run down by the third baseman, who then attempted to throw out Anthony at first base after she rounded the bag. The throw was wild and allowed Anthony to advance to third base. Kate Daly then got on with a bunt single to third base. Anthony was forced to hold at third base. Jess Oldham reached on a fielder's choice that scored Bryele Anthony from third, the shortstop's throw to the plate got away and allowed Oldham to advance to second base. Rylee Martin reached on an error where the shortstops throw took the first baseman off the bag and the ball was dropped on the tag attempt allowing Kate Daly to score to increase the Immaculata lead to 5-3.
  • Ursinus scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, and with the tying run on base Riece Onorato got a pop up to shortstop, a swinging strikeout, and a foul out to first base to close out the win 5-4.

  • The Immaculata softball team will be back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Rutgers-Camden for a doubleheader at 3 and 5 p.m.
