Rutgers-Newark pushes past Softball in Wednesday doubleheader

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata softball team fell in a road doubleheader to Rutgers University-Newark on Wednesday afternoon. Game one saw the Mighty Macs post a five-run fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead, but the Scarlet Raiders leveled the score in the fifth and pushed five runs across in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-6 win for the home team. The second matchup gave Immaculata fits, as Rutgers-Newark rallied for three massive innings to ultimately claim a 23-15 win after six innings. Softball returns home to face Stockton University tomorrow afternoon for a 3pm/5pm doubleheader.
 
Game One
Immaculata 6, Rutgers-Newark 10


How it Happened
  • Aubrey Seider took the circle for Immaculata. Seider retired the first two batters she faced before the Scarlet Raiders used a walk and pair of two-out hits to score the first two runs of the game. 
  • Immaculata's lineup threatened to score early, stranding the bases loaded in the second inning after leaving two baserunners on in the first inning.
  • Aubrey Seider retired the Scarlet Raiders in order in both the second and third inning.
  • The Mighty Macs caught momentum in top of the fourth. Aubrey Seider and Emma Pinto led off with singles as Maddy Formica reached on a poor throw to load the bases. Bryele Anthony walked the Mighty Macs' first run in before Jess Oldham had a 2-run single to take the lead. Carlee Karcher followed suit with a 2-run single of her own, giving IU a 5-2 lead.
  • Seider moved through the fourth inning unscathed.
  • Rutgers-Newark evened the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. There, a string of singles put runners on and allowed a 2-run double to tie the game 5-5.
  • Jess Oldham led off the sixth inning with a double to center. Rylee Martin had a productive out, pushing Oldham to third on a groundout to the right side. Kate Daly ran for Oldham, scoring on a Carlee Karcher RBI groundout to give the Macs a 6-5 edge.
  • The Scarlet Raiders turned the tides in the bottom of the sixth, bringing five runs across the plate, all with two outs. Rutgers Newark tied the score on a wild pitch before a grand slam over the left field wall gave the home team a 10-6 lead. 
  • Rutgers-Newark pitched a clean seventh inning, defeating Immaculata by four runs.

How it Happened
  • Immaculata fell into an 11-0 hole following an ugly first inning. 
  • The Mighty Macs earned back a run in the second inning, as Ava Marchese, Lily Hagan, and Kate Daly picked up hits. 
  • In the third inning, Jess Oldham led off with a single before scoring on a single from Allison Hill three batters later.
  • Emma Mercadante kept the Scarlet Raiders off the board in the second and third innings.
  • Immaculata capitalized on a pair of defensive mistakes from Rutgers-Newark, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth. Rukudzo Taruwinga led off with a single, Bryele Anthony bunted her way on, and Maddy Formica had an infield single to load the bases. Jess Oldham put the ball in play to the left side, reaching on a throwing error and brining two runs across. Rylee Martin had a sac fly to score Formica before Ava Marchese reached on a fielding error as the Macs scored their sixth run.
  • The Scarlet Raiders used three walks and a pair of doubles to extend their 11-6 lead to 16-6 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Immaculata answered with a five-run frame of their own in the fifth. Emma Mercadante and Lily Hagan walked before Kate Daly singled to load the bases. Bryele Anthony hit a triple down the right field line to bring all three home. Anthony scored on an RBI groundout from Maddy Formica. Batting around in the inning, Emma Mercadante pushed the Mighty Macs' 11th run across with a bases loaded walk.
  • Immaculata ate into Rutgers-Newark's lead again in the sixth, posting a four run inning. This time, it was Jess Oldham that delivered a 3-run triple, scoring Daly, Anthony, and Formica who all singled. Ava Marchese had an RBI putout to score Oldham and tighten the game to 16-15 favoring the home team.
  • The Scarlet Raiders had the last word, as their lineup delivered a seven spot in the sixth inning to celebrate a 23-15 run-rule victory.
