Men's Volleyball Falls to Valley Forge in Hard Fought Five Set Match

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa.- The Immaculata men's volleyball team had their four-match win streak snapped on Tuesday falling to Valley Forge in a tough five set match 3-2. Noah Zunski led Immaculata with a career-high 17 kills and had three service aces.  

With the loss Immaculata falls to 5-2 on the season. With the win Valley Forge improves to 4-1 overall. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Set One- In the first set with Immaculata trailing 8-5, Noah Zunski served five consecutive points that included two service aces, and a kill from Josh McGurl as Immaculata took a 10-8 lead. Valley Forge responded and went on to take a 25-24 lead. Immaculata fought off set point, and Michael Prall served the final two points as Immaculata took set one 27-25 on a kill by Noah Zunski

  • Set Two- In the second set Josh McGurl had an early service ace to give Immaculata a 3-2 lead. The teams would exchange points back and forth until Noah Zunski had a service ace put Immaculata up 18-16. Valley Forge would battle back and tied the score at 24-24. Brandon Lieberman served an ace to give Immaculata a set point. Valley Forge rebounded to score three straight points to take set two 27-25. 

  • Set Three- Valley Forge took an early 3-1 lead in the third set. Josh McGurl served two points including a service ace to give Immaculata a 4-3 lead. Ethan Ngo served consecutive points that included kills from Noah Zunski and Joe Martell as Immaculata extended their lead to 15-10. Josh McGurl served consecutive service aces as Immaculata would go on to take set three 25-19. 

  • Set Four- In the fourth set Valley Forge took an early 6-1 lead. Immaculata fought back to close the lead to 10-8 on a Josh McGurl kill. Valley Forge would follow by scoring five out of the next six points to take a 15-9 lead. Trailing 17-11, Noah Zunski got Immaculata a side out on a kill, and Michael Prall served consecutive points with one service ace to cut the lead to 17-14. Immaculata would battle back to tie the set at 21-21 on a Josh McGurl service ace. Valley Forge would go on to force a deciding set winning set four 25-23. 

  • Set Five- Valley Forge would jump out to an early 6-1 lead in the fifth set. Josh McGurl served two consecutive points as Immaculata shrunk the lead to 6-4. Ethan Ngo served three consecutive points including a kill from Josh McGurl as Immaculata pulled within one point trailing 9-8. Nate Bailey got a kill to keep Immaculata in the set down 11-10. Valley Forge scored four consecutive points to take set five 15-9 and the match 3-2. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Noah Zunski led Immaculata with 17 kills, he added two assists, three service aces and six digs. 

  • Josh McGurl had 14 kills, six service aces, one block assist, and eight digs. 

  • Joe Martell had 28 assists, five kills, and a team-high 13 digs. 

  • Nate Bailey had six kills, two assists, two block assists, and two digs. 

  • Christian Lee had four kills, two block assists, and three digs. 

UP NEXT  

  • The Immaculata men's volleyball team will be back in action on Friday, February 14th when they host Virginia Wesleyan (6-2, 1-1 ODAC) to Alumnae Hall for a 7 p.m. match. 

  • On Saturday, February 15th Immaculata will go Eastern University as part of a quad match being hosted at the Nest. Immaculata will host Eastern (7-5, 0-0 MAC) at 2 p.m. and have a rematch with Valley Forge (4-1, 0-0 UEC) at 4 p.m.
