Women's Volleyball Defeats Centenary Cyclones on Senior Night in Thrilling Five-Set Match

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata women's volleyball used a dominant fifth set on Wednesday to earn a 3-2 win over the Centenary University Cyclones.

The Mighty Macs are 9-14 for the season. They are 3-1 in AEC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CENTENARY (N.J.)
  • An opening 5-0 run from the Cyclones was matched by five straight Immaculata points. For five times in a row, Centenary would score a point, followed by an Immaculata point. The Mighty Macs slowly built their lead on kills by Damani Myers, Emma Hodgson, and Eliana Szatkowski. Centenary trailed just behind, but a Hodgson kill gave Immaculata a 25-20 win.
  • A contested opening to the second set eventually led to an 8-1 Centenary run to go up 12-4. The Mighty Macs chipped away at the deficit on a mix of kills and Centenary errors. Although Immaculata got the deficit to within four, the Cyclones tied the match with a 25-20 victory.
  • The visitors had an early advantage before the Mighty Macs knotted the score at 5-5. A 7-1 Immaculata push, courtesy of multiple Centenary errors, would swing momentum in the Mighty Macs' favor. Mia Esposito ended the set with a kill to give the Mighty Macs a 25-19 win.
  • Although both teams kept it close in the fourth set, a 10-1 Centenary outburst gave them a lead in the fourth set they would not relinquish. Immaculata countered by taking seven of the next eight points, but a 25-20 final for Centenary forced a fifth set.
  • The fifth and final set was all Immaculata. After the Cyclones took the first point, the Mighty Macs won the next 12 points. Lauren Gartman served up five aces in that run alone. The match concluded on a Centenary error. Immaculata took the set 15-3, and the match 3-2.
