Women's Basketball Defeats Gwynedd Mercy in AEC Road Contest, 76-61

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa.- The Immaculata women's basketball team defeated Gwynedd Mercy 76-61 Saturday afternoon in an AEC contest at the Griffin Complex. This was the team's sixth consecutive win. Abigail Boyer led Immaculata with 21 points, as one of four players to reach double digits for the Mighty Macs. Reese Mullins and Carly Coleman each registered a double-double for Immaculata.  

With the win, Immaculata moves to 13-3 overall, and to 3-0 in Atlantic East Conference play. With the loss Gwynedd Mercy falls to 4-11 overall, and to 0-2 in Atlantic East Conference play.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the second quarter, Gwynedd Mercy took a 20-13 lead with 7:23 remaining in the quarter. Reese Mullins hit a pair of free throws, Riley Cassidy scored on a layup and Carly Coleman scored on a layup and completed the three-point play at the stripe as Immaculata tied the score at 20-20. Riley Cassidy gave Immaculata a 25-23 lead with a three-pointer with 3:40 remaining. After baskets on jumpers from Reese Mullins and Olivia Ettorre Immaculata led 30-26 at the half. 

  • In the third quarter Tessa Liberatoscioli got Immaculata started with a pair of layups, and Abigail Boyer hit a three-pointer with 6:55 remaining in the quarter to put Immaculata up 39-29. Gwynedd Mercy battled back to close the lead to 39-37, when Abigail Boyer hit another three-pointer to extend the lead back to five. Immaculata would get a pair of free throws from Julia Pohl, and Boyer hit another three-pointer with 0:31 remaining in the quarter as Immaculata led 51-41 after three quarters. 

  • Reese Mullins got Immaculata started early in the fourth quarter with a layup, and Abigail Boyer hit another three-pointer to extend the lead to 56-41. The Griffins would not go quietly as they closed the lead to 65-57 with 3:32 remaining. Reese Mullins hit a pair of free throws, Abigail Boyer scored on a layup, Carly Coleman hit a pair of free throws, Tessa Liberatoscioli scored on a layup, and Riley Cassidy hit a pair of free throws as Immaculata would go on to close out the win 76-61 

TOP PERFORMERS 

  • Abigail Boyer led Immaculata with 21 points, shooting 6-12 from behind the arc, with two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. 

  • Reese Mullins registered a double-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds, one assist, and two steals. 

  • Carly Coleman registered a double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists, two blocked shots, and four steals. 

  • Riley Cassidy scored eight points, with three rebounds, and two steals. 

  • Alyssa Long provided support and leadership off the bench with three rebounds, one assist, and one blocked shot. 

  • Julia Pohl scored two points and added two rebounds for the Mighty Macs. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Immaculata shot 35.5% (22-62) from the field, 26.9% (7-26) from behind the arc, and 67.6% (25-37) from the stripe. They scored 12 second chance points, 26 points in the paint, and 23 points off turnovers. 

  • Gwynedd Mercy shot 36.4% (24-66) from the field, 17.4% (4-23) from behind the arc, and 56.3% (9-16) from the stripe. They scored 12 second chance points, 36 points in the paint, and seven points off turnovers.  

  • The score was tied two times, and there were three lead changes in the game.

  • The Immaculata women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, January 18th when they host Centenary University at Alumnae Hall for an Atlantic East Conference game at 1 p.m.
