Offense Breaks Out as Macs Take Down Cabrini in AEC Tournament Opener

RADNOR, Pa.- The Immaculata University baseball team's bats came alive as the defeated Cabrini 34-11 at Cabrini-Carroll Field in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament. The 34 runs set a new program record for runs in a game, breaking the previous record of 29 set back in 2021.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Immaculata opened the scoring in the top of first inning, when Joey Wright hit a solo home run to left center to put Immaculata ahead 1-0. Josh Crowding followed with a single. Shaw Haut then singled up the middle, the ball got through the centerfielder that allowed Crowding to score, and Haut to reach third. Haut scored on a ground out by Nick Turnage to put Immaculata up 3-0.
  • Cabrini would come back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, and another run in the bottom of the second to tie the score at 3-3.
  • In the top of the third, Shawn Haut dropped a bunt single, the throw by the third baseman got away allowing Joey Wright to score, Crowding to advance to third, and Haut to second. Nick Turnage followed with a double to score Crowding and Haut. Ryan Struble followed with a double of his own to score Turnage to put Immaculata up 7-3.
  • In the top of the fourth Joey Wright and Josh Crowding singled. Shawn Haut sacrifice bunted them to second and third. Nick Turnage drew a walk, and Steven Theisen hit a grand slam home run to left. Ryan Struble then reached on an error. Sal Serici singled, and Joey Sacco walked to load the bases. Joey Wright then hit his second home run of the game, this one a grand slam to left center to put Immaculata ahead 15-3.
  • In the top of the fifth, Hunter Weitzel singled to right field to score Steven Thiesen, and Shawn Haut. Sal Serici scored Ryan Struble on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Joey Wright followed with a two-run double to center field scoring Weitzel and Sacco.
  • Cabrini would respond with a run in the fifth inning, and three in the sixth inning.
  • In the seventh inning Josh Crowding walked with the bases loaded to score Sal Serici. Nick Turnage hit a two-run single to center field to scored Sacco and Wright. Ryan Struble drew a bases loaded walk, Hunter Weitzel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Sal Serici drew a bases loaded walk. Joey Sacco hit an RBI single to left field to score Struble.
  • Cabrini added a run in the seventh inning.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Erik Molinaro singled to center field to score Robert Woodward. Jay Lawrence was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Maddox Stern. Erik Molinaro would score on a ground ball double play to put Immaculata ahead 30-8.
  • Cabrini would score three runs in the bottom of the eighth hitting a pair of home runs.
  • Joey Wright led off the ninth inning with his third home run of the game to left center field. Kristian Saucedo hit an RBI single to center field to score Woodward. Hunter Weitzel drew a bases loaded walk to score Stern, and Sal Serici hit an RBI single to left field to score Josh Goulburn.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Joey Wright led the Mighty Macs offensively going 6-for-7 with six runs scored, a double, three home runs, and eight RBIs. His three home runs tied the program record of home runs in a single game tying Richard Fontanillas who hit three home runs against Cabrini on May 3, 2019. His six hits today, ties his program record of six set vs Neumann on April 11, 2023. He also broke program record of hits in a season today break Josh Crowding's record of 61 in 2023. Wright now has 65 hits on the season.
  • Nick Turnage was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and five RBIs.
  • Steven Theisen was 3-fo4-5 with three runs scored, and a grand slam home run.
  • Sal Serici was 4-for5 with two runs scored, and three RBIs.
  • Shawn Haut was 4-for-6 with three runs scored.
  • Josh Crowding was 3-for-5 with four runs scored, and two RBIs.
  • Stephen DiBattista earned the win to raise his record to 9-3 on the season going five innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.
  • Jake Confrey, Matthew Long, Brian Dino, and Alexander Singer all saw action in relief.

  • The remainder of the Atlantic East Championship Tournament will move to Kevin Anderson Field at Bridgeforth Stadium in Winchester, VA.
  • On Friday, May 10th, Cabrini will play Gwynedd Mercy at 9:00 AM in an elimination game.
  • Immaculata will play Marymount at 12:30 PM in the Winner's bracket final. With the winner advancing to Saturday's Championship Round.
  • The winner of the Cabrini vs Gwynedd Mercy game will play the loser of the Immaculata vs Marymount game in an elimination game at 4:00 PM.
  • Game one of the Finals is scheduled for Saturday, Mary 11th at 1:00 PM. Game two is scheduled for 4:30 if necessary.
