Hughes throws Seven Scoreless as Macs take Down Marymount to Advance to AEC Finals

WINCHESTER, Va.- The Immaculata University baseball team defeated No. 1 seed Marymount 9-0 to advance to the Atlantic East Conference Finals for the fourth consecutive year. Immaculata will play the winner of the Marymount vs. Cabrini elimination game tomorrow at 1:00 PM. 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Immaculata opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning when Steve Theisen singled right field to score Joey Wright to put Immaculata up 1-0. 

  • In the top of top the fifth inning Joey Sacco hustled to beat out a potential inning-ending double play to bring Joey Wright to the plate. Joe Wright hit an RBI infield single off the mound to score Hunter Weitzel to extend the Mighty Macs lead to 2-0. After Josh Crowing drew a walk to load the bases. Shawn Haut reached base on an error by the shortstop to score Sacco and Wright to increase the score to 4-0. 

  • In the top of the sixth inning, Immaculata took advantage of a pair of fielding errors, as Joey Sacco hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Steven Theisen. Josh Crowding drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs to score Hunter Weitzel. After a pitching change by Marymount, Shaw Haut followed with a bases-clearing double to score Sal Serici, Joey Wright, and Josh Crowding to increase Immaculata's lead to 9-0. 

  • Marymount threatened in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runners on, starter Jason Hughes made a strong play on a sacrifice bunt to get the out at first base. He then got a strikeout to end the inning. 

  • Matthew Long came on in relief for Immaculata to work a scoreless eighth inning. 

  • Alexander Singer pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Immaculata was led by senior starter Jason Hughes who threw seven scoreless innings allowing three hits and struck out eight to raise his record on the season to 5-4. 

  • Shawn Haut was 1-f0r-5 with a double and three RBIs. 

  • Joey Wright stayed hot, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. 

  • Joey Sacco, Josh Crowding, and Steven Theisen all had RBIs for the Mighty Macs. 

UP NEXT 

  • Immaculata will take on the winner of the Marymount vs. Cabrini elimination game on Saturday, May 11th at 12:00 PM. Immaculata, as the last undefeated team in the tournament, will have to lose twice to be beaten. The second game of the finals is scheduled for 3:30 PM if necessary.
