DiBattista Throws A Complete Game Five-Hit Shutout to Lead Macs to a NCAA Regional Win Over Scranton

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Stephen DiBattista threw a complete game five-hit shutout to lead Immaculata to an 8-0 win over Scranton in their elimination game in the NCAA Newport News Regional. The Mighty Macs will advance to play the loser of the Christopher Newport vs. North Carolina Wesleyan game on Sunday, May 19th at 11:00 a.m. at Captain's Park.  

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Immaculata opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Joey Wright singled to left with one out. Josh Crowding doubled down the left field line to move Wright to third. Wright scored on a ground out to second base by Shawn Haut.

  • In the bottom of the second inning, Sal Serici tripled to right field to score Hunter Weitzel from first to extend the Immaculata lead to 2-0.  

  • In the bottom of the fourth Ryan Struble led off with a double to right field. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Weitzel. Sal Serici scored Struble with a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to second on a throwing error. Joey Sacco singled to left to advance Serici to third. After Sacco stole second, Joey Wright singled up the middle to score Serici and Sacco to increase the lead to 5-0. 

  • In the bottom of the fifth, Nick Turnage walked. Stole second base and scored on a single to right center by Steven Theisen to extend the lead to 6-0. 

  • In the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Struble walked, stole second base, and scored on an RBI double to left field by Hunter Weitzel to put Immaculata ahead 7-0. 

  • In the bottom of the eighth Joey Wright, who led off with a single, scored on a throwing error at second base on a steal attempt by Shawn Haut.  

  • Stephen DiBattista retired the final seven batters he faced getting the final out on a ground out to first baseman Joey Wright to end the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Stephen DiBattista was outstanding on the mound, with a complete game five-hit shutout, allowing only one walk, and striking out 11 to raise his record on the season to 10-3. 

  • Joey Wright was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and two RBIs to lead the Mighty Macs offense. 

  • Sal Serici was 1-for-2 with a two-run triple. 

  • Ryan Struble was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, and two runs scored. 

  • Shawn Haut, Steven Theisen, and Hunter Weitzel all had RBIs for the Macs.
