Baseball Season Ends in NCAA Regionals with 4-0 Loss to Nationally Ranked North Carolina Wesleyan

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Immaculata University baseball team fell to No. 17 ranked North Carolina Wesleyan 4-0 in their elimination game in the NCAA Regionals. The Mighty Macs ended their season with an overall record of 27-18. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the top of the third inning, North Carolina Wesleyan loaded the bases with two outs. Alex LePage retired the side on as he deflected a ground ball up the middle to second baseman Joey Sacco who made the play to first to end the inning. 

  • North Carolina Wesleyan opened the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field to take a 1-0 lead. 

  • Alex LePage gave up a lead off single in the top of the eighth inning and was lifted for Jason Hughes.  

  • North Carolina Wesleyan added on to their lead in the top of the eighth with a two-run double to left field to increase their lead to 3-0. Jason Hughes retired the side by picking off the runner at second base. 

  • North Carolina Wesleyan added a run in the top of the ninth to extend its lead to 4-0. Matthew Long came in to record the final out of the inning for Immaculata. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Alex LePage was strong on the mound for the Mighty Macs, going seven innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and striking out four. 

  • Jason Hughes pitched 1.2 innings in relief allowing two hits and two earned runs. 

  • Matthew Long pitched 0.1 innings, allowing one hit. 

  • Joey Wright had the Mighty Macs lone hit on the day.
