Macs Fall to Nationally Ranked Christopher Newport in 15 Innings in Regional Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Immaculata University baseball team dropped their opening game in Regionals 3-2 to No. 10 ranked Christopher Newport in fifteen innings. This was the second-longest game in Immaculata program history. Jason Hughes was outstanding on the mound today for the Mighty Macs. Sal Serici made a diving catch in right field in the bottom of the ninth inning to rob a walk-off hit and send the game to extra innings. 

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Nick Turnage doubled down the left field line to score Joey Wright and Shawn Haut to give the Immaculata a 2-0 lead. 

  • Christopher Newport got a lead-off double in the bottom of the second inning. After the runner was moved to third with a sacrifice bunt. Hughes retired the final two batters to work out of the threat. 

  • Christopher Newport scored in the bottom of third with two outs on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1. 

  • Christopher Newport got a runner on in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Hughes was able to turn a 1-6-3 double play to retire the side.  

  • Immaculata loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth but did not score after a home-to-first double play, and a ground out to second base.  

  • In the bottom of the seventh, Newport got two runners on with two outs. Hughes got a strikeout to end the inning. 

  • Immaculata had runners on second and third with one out after a sacrifice bunt by Steven Theisen but could not score. 

  • Christopher Newport tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of singles. Immaculata made a pitching change, bringing in Stephen DiBattista.  

  • Sal Serici made an incredible diving catch in right field to save the game and send it to extra innings. 

  • Christopher Newport got consecutive singles with one out in the bottom of the sixteenth. Newport won the game in the bottom of the fifteenth on a walk-off double to right field. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Jason Hughes was outstanding on the mound, going 8.1 innings allowing five hits, two earned runs, and striking out five. 

  • Nick Turnage was 1-for-5 with a two-RBI double in the top of the first inning. 

  • Shawn Haut was 3-for-7 on the day. 

  • Matthew Long took the hard-luck loss in relief to fall to 2-4 on the season. Pitching 5.1 innings in relief, allowing five hits, one earned run and striking out four. 

  • The Mighty Macs stranded 10 runners on base. 

UP NEXT 

The Mighty Macs will be back in action on Saturday morning, May 18th when they play the loser of the Scranton vs. North Carolina Wesleyan at 8:30 AM in an elimination game.
