UPPER CHICHESTER, Pa.- The Immaculata University softball team was back in action on Thursday evening, as they traveled to take on Penn State-Brandywine in a doubleheader at the Maple Zone Sports Village. Immaculata dropped both doubleheader games, falling 3-2 in game one and 2-0 in game two.
Game One: Penn State – Brandywine 3, IMMACULATA 2
In game one, Immaculata scored in the top of the third, when Kaitlyn Carter reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop to score Steph Kelly with the game's first run.
Penn State – Brandywine would respond in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs.
Immaculata would get a run back in the top of the fourth inning when Peyton McGowan doubled. With two outs Allison Hill tripled to right field to score McGowan to cut the Penn State – Brandywine lead to 4-3.
Penn State – Brandywine would go on to win game one 4-3.
Emma Mercadante took the loss, despite keeping Penn State–Brandywine off balance for most of the game. She allowed eight hits, three earned runs, and struck out three.
Game Two: Penn State – Brandywine 2, IMMACULATA 0
In game two, Penn State–Brandywine opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, scoring when their runner at first base was picked off by the catcher Caitlin Jordan. The runner stayed in a rundown long enough to allow their runner from third base to score the game's first run.
Penn State – Brandywine would threaten again in the bottom of the third, but Immaculata pitcher Courtney Gable fielded a bunt attempt, and made the play to third to get the lead runner for the second out of the inning. Gable retired the side fielding a ball hit up the middle and threw the batter out at first.
Immaculata was limited to only four hits in the game, as Penn State–Brandywine added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and held on to take game two 2-0.
Kaitlyn Carter had two hits in the game for Immaculata.
Courtney Gable took the loss, despite pitching a strong game. Gable limited Penn State–Brandywine to six hits, one earned run, one walk, and two strikeouts. Gable also had a strong game defensively with five assists.
