Sacco and Crowding Reach Milestone as Macs Sweep Doubleheader at Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.- The Immaculata University baseball team was back in action on Thursday afternoon visiting Centenary University for an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader. Immaculata would sweep the doubleheader winning game one 10-4, before taking game two 8-2.

It was a milestone day for Immaculata as two Mighty Macs became the first players to reach 200 career hits. Joey Sacco went 3-for-3 in game one of the doubleheader to become the first player in Immaculata baseball program history to reach 200 career hits. Sacco was joined in the 200 hit club by teammate Josh Crowding who went 2-for-4 in game two to reach the 200-career hit milestone.

Game One:         IMMACULATA 10, Centenary 4

In game one, Immaculata opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Joey Sacco scored on a wild pitch. Josh Crowding followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Joey Wright. Jay Lawrence then doubled to left field to score Crowding to give Immaculata an early 3-0 lead.

Sean Haut would extend the Immaculata lead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run home run to put Immaculata ahead 5-0.

Centenary would respond with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to cut the Immaculata lead to 5-2.

Immaculata scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Joey Wright got an infield single scoring Joey Sacco to put Immaculata up 6-2.

Centenary scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 6-3.

Joey Wright got the run back for Immaculata in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Sal Serici.
Centenary got one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 7-4.

Steven Theisen had an RBI single to right field in the top of the seventh inning scoring Ryan Struble. Hunter Weitzel followed by executing a squeeze sacrifice bunt to score Joey Mazzone. Joey Sacco then closed out the scoring with an RBI single to make the score 10-4. This was Sacco's 200th career hit.

Starting pitcher Jason Hughes (2-1) closed out the complete game win in the bottom of the seventh inning inducing a game ending 4-6-3 double play. Hughes allowed eight hits, three earned runs, and struck out one for the win.

Game Two:         IMMACULATA 8, Centenary 2

In game two, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when Centenary pushed across a pair of runs to lead 2-0.
Immaculata responded in the top of the sixth with four runs. Ryan Struble hit a two-run single to center field to score Joey Wright and Sean Haut to tie the score at 2-2. After a pitching change, Hunter Weitzel drew a walk to load the bases. Steven Theisen was hit by pitch to score Josh Crowding and put Immaculata up to stay at 3-2. After another pitching change, Robert Woodward was also hit by pitch next scoring Ryan Struble to increase Immaculata's lead to 4-2.

Immaculata extended their lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-run single by Sal Serici to center field that scored Steven Theisen and Hunter Weitzel to put Immaculata ahead 6-2.

In the top of the ninth, Joey Wright stole second base, allowing Sean Haut to score. Josh Crowding followed with an RBI single to score Joey Wright. This hit was Josh Crowding 200th career hit.

Immaculata starting pitcher Stephen DiBattista (5-0) earned the complete game win scattering nine hits, allowing two earned runs, and struck out four to help Immaculata to their sixth consecutive win.

The Immaculata University baseball team (15-7, 5-0 Atlantic East) will be back in action on Monday, April 1st when the host Centenary for the third game of the Atlantic East Conference series at the IU Baseball Stadium at 11:30 AM.
