McGowan's Walk-Off Home Run lifts Macs to Doubleheader Split with Ursinus

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata University softball team was back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they hosted Ursinus College for a doubleheader at the IU Softball Field. Immaculata earned a split in the doubleheader dropping the first game 10-4, before winning game two 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning on a three-run walk-off home run center field by Peyton McGowan.

Game One: Ursinus 10, IMMACULATA 4

In game one, Ursinus opened the scoring in the scoring in the top of the first inning on an RBI double to take the 1-0 lead.

Immaculata would respond in the bottom of the first inning, when Peyton McGowan singled to left field, and advanced to left field on an error by the left fielder. Bryele Anthony and Kaitlyn Carter both scored as Immaculata took a 2-1 lead.

Immaculata starting pitcher Riece Onorato was able to hold Ursinus off the board in the second, third, and fourth innings.  
             
Ursinus tied the score in the top of the fifth inning, on a single to left field to make the score 2-2.

Ursinus, would break the game open in the top of the sixth inning scoring six runs to take an 8-2 lead. Courtney Gable came on in relief for Immaculata during the sixth inning.

Immaculata got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kristen Carter singled to center field to score Rylee Martin who led off the inning with a single to make the score 8-3.

Ursinus added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 10-3.

Rylee Martin drove in Immaculata's fourth run with a sacrifice fly to center field, as Ursinus held on to take game one 10-4.

Riece Onorato took the loss falling 1-1 on the season, going 5.2 innings allowing nine hits, five runs, two earned runs, and struck out one.

Game Two: IMMACULATA 5, Ursinus 3 (8 Innings)

In game two, the game remained scoreless until the seventh inning, as starting pitchers Nadia Bhuiyan for Immaculata, and Stephanie Wichman for Ursinus were strong on the mound.

In the top of the fifth inning, Ursinus threatened to open the scoring was their first two hitters reached base on bunt singles. Nadia Bhuiyan got the next hitter to fly out to left field, then got the following hitter to ground into an inning ending force at third throw to first double play by Kaitlyn Carter.

Ursinus opened the scoring in the top of the seventh, with a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.

Immaculata would respond in the bottom of the seventh, as Rylee Martin drew a lead off walk, and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Carlee Karcher followed with an RBI single to center field to score Martin to cut the lead to 2-1. Naila Valdez came on to pinch run for Karcher. Emma Pinto then drew a walk, and Isabella Pastella laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to give Immaculata runners at second and third with one out. Steph Kelly bunted into a fielder's choice with Naila Valdez being tug out at the plate. Bryele Anthony then slapped a base hit into left field to tie the score at 2-2 and send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, using the international tiebreaker with the last out of the seventh inning starting at second base, Ursinus was able to score a run to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kaitlyn Carter started at second base as the runner. Jess Oldham singled to left field to advance Kaitlyn Cater to third base. The hit was Jess Oldham's 100th career hit. Jess Oldham proceeded to steal second base to move the potential winning run to second base. Peyton McGowan followed with walk-off home run to centerfield to give Immaculata the 5-3 win and earn the spit in the doubleheader.

Nadia Bhuiyan earned the complete game win, raising her record on the season to 2-2, going eight innings, allowing three runs, no earned runs, and struck out one.

The Immaculata University softball team (10-8, 2-2 Atlantic East) will be back in action on Tuesday, April 2nd when they will visit Neumann University for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM. This was rescheduled from Thursday, March 28th due to pending inclement weather. The doubleheader scheduled at Swarthmore on Tuesday, March April 2nd, has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 4th at 3:00 PM.
