IMMACULATA,Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team took both games in their double header with Gwynedd Mercy University to open up Atlantic East Conference play.
Game One: Immaculata 10 Gwynedd Mercy 5 (7 Inning Double Header Rule)
Junior pitcher
Jason Hughes was dominant on the mound, going six innings of shutout baseball. On the day, he racked up 12 strikeouts and only allowing 3 hits. Through the first three innings of work he did not allow a single hit.
At the plate, the Macs started the scoring early, with a
Josh Crowding single driving in
Frank Margiotta. The 4
th inning would be the difference maker, with the Mighty Macs bringing in 7 runs in the inning. With Margiotta,
Joey Wright,
Joey Sacco,
Ryan Struble and
Jay Lawrence
All driving in runs in the inning.
Joey Wright would add a sacrifice fly in the 5
th to round out the scoring for Immaculata.
The Griffins would score five unearned runs in the bottom of the 7
th.
Game Two: Immaculata 9 Gwynedd Mercy 1 (7 Innings)
Senior
Ryan Crowell was electric on the mound, allowing a single run in the first inning but shutting down the Griffins offense after that. He would go on to throw a complete game, going seven innings while only allowing five hits on the evening. Crowell would strikeout seven.
The Mighty Macs offense again jumped out to a fast start, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the 1
st from a double to right center field from
Josh Crowding, driving in
Frank Margiotta and
Joey Wright.
Ryan Struble would bring in another with an RBI groundout.
The 5
th inning is where the Macs would pull away, with Struble providing a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Margiotta. Sophomore
Maddox Stern would come up with the bases loaded in the inning, where he would drive a fastball over the left field fence for a Grand Slam, the first homerun of his Mighty Mac career.
