DOYLESTOWN, Pa.- Emma Mercadante was outstanding in the circle for Immaculata, pitching a no-hitter in game one to lead the Mighty Macs to a sweep with Delaware Valley, winning game one 10-0 in five-innings before winning game two by a final of 13-7.
Mercadante was able to keep the Aggies offense off the board, allowing only two runners to reach base. Mercadante struck out five and allowed no walks, inducing the final Delaware Valley hitter to pop out to short to end the game. Mercadante moves to 2-0 on the season for the Macs.
In game one, Immaculata got on the board in the top of the first inning when
Jess Oldham singled to center scoringÂ
Bryele Anthony.
Carlee Karcher doubled to left field to score
Jess Oldham to give the Macs a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning,
Jess Oldham doubled to left to drive in
Elena Anglani.
Carlee Karcher then homered to center field to put Immaculata up 5-0. This was Karcher's first collegiate home run. The Mighty Macs would add two more runs in the third when
Kaitlyn Carter doubled to down the left field line to score
Rylee Martin.
Morgan Sakulich then scored on a wild pitch to put the Macs up 7-0.
Immaculata would add on three runs in the top of the fifth inning as
Carly Grandizio,
Bryele Anthony, and
Emma Pinto all scored as Immaculata took a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Emma Mercadante's no-hitter is the first no-hitter in modern program history (starting in 2007). On three prior occasions Immaculata pitchers have taken no-hitter into the final inning only to lose the bid. The most recent was Allison Zbrowski in 2011.
In game two, Immaculata got on the board in the top of the first once again as
Sara Rode doubled to right center that scored
Bryele Anthony.
Carlee Karcher singled to left to score
Jess Oldham and
Sara Rode as Immaculata took a 3-0 lead.
Delaware Valley would score a run in their half of the first to close Immaculata's lead to 3-1.
Immaculata would answer back in the top of the third when
Jess Oldham scored on a throwing error by the Aggies pitcher.
Peyton McGowan followed with a double to left center to score
Rylee Martin.
Alyssa Daly followed with a double to right field to score
Peyton McGowan and
Lauren Carboni to put Immaculata up 7-1. The Macs added on a another run when
Kaitlyn Carter scored on an error by Delaware Valley as the Macs took an 8-1 lead.
Delaware Valley responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut Immaculata's lead to 8-4. Macs starting pitcher
Courtney Gable was able to get out of the inning getting the final batter to ground out to her on the mound.
Immaculata added to their lead in the top of the sixth when
Lauren Carboni singled home a run, and in the top of the seventh
Rylee Martin hit a Grand Slam to right field to extend the Macs lead to 13-4. This was Martin's first collegiate home run.
Delaware Valley would score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Macs held on to complete the doubleheader sweep winning 13-7.
Immaculata starter
Courtney Gable earned the win going the distance, allowing 11 hits, seven runs, and struck out three to raise her record to 2-0 on the season.
The Immaculata softball team (4-2) will be back in action on Saturday March 18th, when the travel to play at Centenary University in a doubleheader to open Atlantic East Conference play with the first game scheduled to start at 12:00 PM.
