Baseball Earns 20th Win of the Season in Shutout Over Centenary

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Jason Hughes and Trevor Wagner combined to pitch a shutout as the Immaculata baseball team took down Centenary 8-0 on Friday afternoon. Joey Sacco also scored his 100th career run as the Mighty Macs improve to a 20-7 record on the season with an 9-1 record in Atlantic East Conference play.
 
The Macs struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Louis Sharp led off the inning with a single down the left field line. Jason Smiley and Ryan Struble then made it three straight singles for the Macs as they found themselves with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Steven Theisen hit a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring Sharp to give the Macs a 1-0 lead over the Cyclones.
 
Next, in the bottom of the third, Joey Sacco reached base on a single with one out. After advancing to third on a throwing error, Sharp batted in Sacco on a single into left field as the Macs took a 2-0 advantage. Sacco's run, his first of two on the day, marks his 100th career run scored for the Mighty Macs.
 
The following inning, Frank Margiotta reached base on a fielder's choice. Sacco then hit a double down the left field line, scoring Margiotta from first as the Macs increased their lead to 3-0.
 
The Macs then doubled their lead over the sixth and seventh innings. Isaiah Payton led off the inning with a walk. Steven Theisen then ripped a double into right-center field, moving Payton to third. Margiotta then batted in Payton on a sacrifice fly into center field. The following inning, Smiley reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to third on a double from Struble. Smiley then scored on a wild pitch while Struble moved to third. Later in the inning Struble scored on a fielder's choice from Theisen, increasing the Macs' lead to 6-0.
 
A hit-by-pitch to Sacco started of the bottom of the eight as the Macs looked to add to their lead. Two batters later, Crowding hit a double deep into the left field corner, moving Sacco to third. The pair then scored on a single into right field by Smiley as the Macs went up 8-0 over the Cyclones.
 
One batter reached base in the top of the ninth for the Cyclones as the Macs secured an 8-0 victory. Jason Hughes earned the win for the Mighty Macs, pitching seven shutout innings while allowing five hits and one walk. Hughes struck out seven Cyclones batters on his way to his fifth win of the season. Trevor Wagner completed the combined shutout for the Macs, pitching two innings of one-hit ball while striking out three batters.
 
Offensively, the Macs were led by Jason Smiley, who went 3-for-5 on the day with one run scored and two RBI. Joey Sacco, meanwhile, recorded his 100th and 101st career runs scored on the day, going 2-for-3 with a double, one walk, and one RBI.
 
The Mighty Macs will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Centenary for the final two games of their conference series. Game on of their doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 P.M.
