HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Immaculata baseball team split their away doubleheader with Centenary, dropping game one 3-2 before taking game two 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Game one began with three quiet frames as neither team could mange to score a run. The Mighty Macs, however, broke the ice in the top of the fourth inning.
Jason Smiley reached on a single into right field to kick off the inning. Smiley then advanced to third base following a hit batter and a fielder's choice for the Macs, put Smiley on third and
Steven Theisen on at first with one out. A failed pickoff attempt resulted in an error by the pitcher, scoring Smiley to give the Macs the 1-0 lead.
Joey Sacco then led off the top of the fifth with a double down the left field line. After moving to third on a passed ball, Sacco scored on a sacrifice fly by
Joey Wright to increase the Macs' lead.
Centenary then responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring two runs to tie the game at 2-2. Centenary then came up to bat with the seven-inning game tied in the bottom of the seventh. Centenary won game one in walk-off fashion with a single into left field, securing game one 3-2 against Immaculata.
Sacco went 2-for-4 on the game with one run scored and one double while
Josh Crowding went 1-for-1 with a double and three walks for the Macs.
The Macs struck first in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the third.
Joe Esposito hit a leadoff single into left field, eventually moving to third as
Frank Margiotta and Sacco reached on a walk and single.
Joey Wright then reached base on an error by the third basemen, scoring Esposito and Margiotta to give the Macs a 2-0 lead.
Centenary got one run back in the bottom of the fourth to cut Immaculata's lead to 2-1. Immaculata, however, regained the two-run advantage in the top of the fifth. Wright reached base on a two-out walk only to score after back-to-back singles from Crowding and
Louis Sharp.
Later, in the top of the seventh, Crowding smacked a solo home run into left field to give the Macs a three-run lead over the Cyclones. Next inning, the Macs picked up two runs to claim a 6-1 lead. Theisen and Margiotta reached base on back-to-back walks, both moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. Sacco then batted in Theisen on a sacrifice fly while a double from Wright scored Margiotta.
Centenary went quietly in the eighth and ninth innings as the Mighty Macs secured a series victory in their 6-1 final of game two.
Ryan Crowell earned the victory on the mound for the Macs, pitching a one-run complete game. Crowell allowed six hits and one walk on the day while striking out five batters overall.
Margiotta reached base five times in game two, going 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored on the game. Crowding, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 on the game with a solo home run and a walk.
The Mighty Macs will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Rowan for a non-conference matchup.
