IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata softball team split its doubleheader today against Marymount University, winning game one by a score of 4-3 and dropping game two 5-1.
Prior to the start of today' game, the Mighty Macs honored the four members of its senior class in
Katy Newton,
Sarah Guido,
Kayley Peugh, and
Cat Knoll for their tremendous collegiate careers at Immaculata.
Marymount kicked off game one by scoring a run in the top of the first to claim an early lead. Immaculata, however, quickly responded in the bottom of the first.
Bryele Anthony hit an infield single to kick off the inning before advancing to second on a hit-by-pitch to
Kaitlyn Carter. After both runners advanced a base, Anthony then scored on a double by
Jess Oldham to tie the game up at 1-1.
After two quiet innings, the Macs broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Newton and Anthony reached base on back-to-back singles. After executing a double steal, both runners scored on a single from
Kaitlyn Carter, giving the Macs a 3-1 lead.
One inning later,
Jess Oldham ripped a solo home run into center field, increasing the Macs' lead to 4-1. The Saints would attempt to come back, scoring one run in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to as the Macs claimed the game in a 4-3 decision.
Senior starting pitcher
Sarah Guido pitched a complete game on game one, allowing three runs while striking out two Saints batters. Offensively,
Jess Oldham went 2-for-3 with a home run and double, scoring one run and two RBI while
Bryele Anthony went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
Marymount jumped to another early lead in game one, scoring another first inning run against Immaculata. Immaculata's offense, meanwhile, would not get going until the bottom of the fourth. After
Cat Knoll reached base on a lead-off walk,
Steph Kelly took over as pinch runner. Following a groundout to advance Kelly to second, Kelly scored on an infield single for
Peyton McGowan, scoring on an error by the pitcher to tie the game at 1-1.
Emma Mercadante pitched a complete game for the Macs, going into the seventh inning with the game tied at 1-1. Unfortunately, the Macs allowed four unearned runs to be scored on the inning as the Saints ran away with a 5-1 victory in game two. On the game, Mercadante allowed one earned run on eight hits while striking out three batters.
The Macs, meanwhile, were kept to four hits on the game. Senior
Katy Newton recorded two of those hits, going 2-for-3 on the game.
The Mighty Macs will next hit the road as they travel to Delaware Valley on Thursday.
