Knoll Homers Twice in DH Loss to Cabrini


RADNOR, Pa. – The Immaculata softball team dropped both sides of its doubleheader against Cabrini on Monday.
 
After two quiet frames to kick off game one, Cabrini broke the ice in game one, scoring two runs off a home run to give themselves a 2-0 lead. Cabrini then increased the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring an additional run.
 
With two outs in the top of the sixth, the Mighty Macs scored their first run of the game. Sara Rode reached on a two-out single before advancing to second on a hit-by-pitch to Alyssa Daly. Rode then scored from second on a single from Peyton McGowan, putting the Macs on the board.
 
The Cavaliers then scored one run in the bottom of the sixth, maintaining a three-run lead over the Macs 4-1. The Macs stepped up to the plate in the top of the seventh determine to catch up to the Cavaliers. Katy Newton hit a lead-off bunt single to kick off the inning. Three straight walks to Bryele Anthony, Kaitlyn Carter, and Cat Knoll then scored Newton, cutting the Cavaliers' lead to 4-2. Later, with one out, Rode hit a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring Anthony to bring the Macs to within one run. The Macs, however, would be unable to plate another runner as the Cavaliers claimed game one 4-3.
 
Rode, McGowan, and Newton each recorded one hit on the game as the Macs only had three hits on the game. Anthony, however, reached base four times with four walks out of the lead-off spot on the game for the Macs.
 
Cabrini then quickly jumped out to a lead in game two, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first.
 
After a quiet second inning, the Mighty Macs looked to cut into the Cavaliers' lead in the top of the third. With one out on the inning, Newton and Anthony recorded back-to-back infield singles to put runners on for the Macs. After Kaitlyn Carter reached base on a hit-by-pitch, Knoll stepped up to the plate with the bases juiced. Knoll then smacked a grand slam, her first home run of the season, to cut the Cavaliers' lead to 5-4.
 
Cabrini then scored one run in the bottom of the third to regain a two-run lead over Immaculata. McGowan, however, cut the lead back down to one with a lead-off home run in the top of the fourth.
 
The Cavaliers then responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and three runs in the fifth, taking an 11-5 lead over the Macs.
 
With one out in the top of the seventh, Kaitlyn Carter reached base on an error. Knoll then hit her second home run of the game, cutting the Cavaliers' lead to 11-7. Rode then hit a single into right field with two outs looking to extend the rally. Rode later scored on an error, but the Macs would be unable to score any additional runs as the Cavaliers secured the series sweep with an 11-8 final score.
 
Knoll led the Macs on game two, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and six RBI on the game.
 
The Mighty Macs will return to action on Tuesday as they host Marymount at 3:00 P.M. Prior to the start of game one, Immaculata will honor its senior class.
