DAVENPORT, Fl. – The Immaculata baseball continued its spring break trip on Monday as they defeated Ohio Northern 9-4. Freshman
Jason Hughes earned his first collegiate win on the game, pitching six innings of one-run baseball.
Frank Margiotta led off the game with a walk for the Macs in the top of the first. After advancing due to a hit batter and a stolen base, Margiotta scored on a wild pitch, getting the Macs on the board 1-0 before an out was recorded.
After three scoreless frames, the Macs looked to increase their lead in the top of the fifth. Margiotta and
Jason Smiley hit back-to-back singles before executing a double-steal, giving the Macs two runners in scoring position with one out.
Joey Wright then hit a sacrifice fly into right field, scoring Margiotta.
Josh Crowding stepped up to the plate next and hit a double into left field, scoring Smiley and giving the Macs a 3-0 lead.
The Polar Bears broke the ice in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a wild pitch to cut the Macs' lead to 3-1.
The Macs loaded the bases quickly in the top of the sixth as they threatened to increase their lead. Margiotta hit an RBI-single, scoring
Ryan Struble before two wild pitches scored
Jay Lawrence and
Joey Sacco as the Macs exited the inning with a 6-1 advantage over the Polar Bears.
Hughes exited the game after six successive innings on the mound, allowing five hits and two walks overall while striking out five batters. Hughes' sole run was unearned as he put himself in line for the win on the game.
Three more Mighty Mac runs scored on wild pitches in the top of the seventh, giving the Macs a 9-1 lead over the Polar Bears. A solo home run in the bottom of the eighth combined with a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth would be all the offense the Bears could muster the rest of the game as the Macs claimed a 9-4 victory.
Margiotta went 2-for-3 on the day, scoring two runs and one RBI while walking once and stealing two bases to lead the Macs offensively.
Jason Smiley and
Josh Crowding each went 2-for-4 on the day, scoring one run apiece.
The Mighty Macs will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they face Johnson & Wales at 5:15 P.M. in Auburndale, Fl.
