IMMACULATA, Pa. – Frank Margiotta did it all as the Immaculata baseball team took down Ursinus 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon. Margiotta made a game-saving diving catch in the top of the eighth while scoring four runs at the plate for the Macs.
All of Ursinus' run production came in the top of the second, scoring three runs on the inning to claim a 3-0 lead over Immaculata.
In the bottom of the third, Margiotta reached base on a walk before stealing second base. After
Joey Wright walked,
Josh Crowding stepped up and slapped a single, scoring Margiotta on an error to break the ice for the Macs.
A similar story took place in the bottom of the fifth. Margiotta led off the inning with a walk, later reaching third on a sacrifice bunt from Wright. Crowding then hit a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring Margiotta as the Macs came to within one run of the Bears at 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Mighty Macs came to bat determined to usurp the bears.
Joey Sacco led off the inning with a walk. With Sacco on, Margiotta laid down a sacrifice bunt, beating the throw to first to earn the bunt single.
Jason Smiley then hit a single into right field, scoring Sacco to tie the game up at 3-3. Following a Wright walk, the bases were loaded when Crowding singled into center field, scoring Margiotta to give the Macs the lead.
Louis Sharp then rounded out the Macs' scoring on the inning, hitting a sacrifice fly, scoring Smiley and increasing the Macs' lead to 5-3.
In the top of the eighth, the Bears threatened with two runners on with two outs. Margiotta then tracked down a line drive into left-center field, going the distance and laying out to save two runs from scoring, shutting down the Bears' counterattack.
Margiotta scored one final time in the bottom of the eighth, reaching on a single before scoring on a double from Smiley, giving the Macs an additional insurance run as the score stood 6-3.
Mason Keller then entered the game in the bottom of the ninth, allowing one baserunner on the inning as he earned the save for the Mighty Macs.
Alex Singer earned the victory on the mound for the Mighty Macs, pitching 1.2 innings of shutout baseball while striking out three batters.
Offensively, Margiotta led the way for the Mighty Macs, going 3-for-3 on the game with four runs scored, two walks, and three stolen bases.
Jason Smiley also contributed offensively, going 2-for-4 with one run scored and four RBI on the game.
The Mighty Macs will return to action on Friday as they open up their weekend series against Marymount at home.
