NAPLES, Fl . – The Immaculata softball team defeated Albion College 10-4 in game one of today's doubleheader. The Macs then dropped game two of the split-DH 9-4 against New Jersey City.
The Macs jumped to an early lead in the top of the first.
Kaitlyn Carter and
Bryele Anthony recorded back-to-back walks to kick off the game before an RBI-single from
Emma Murphy scored Carter.
Carly Grandizio and
Alyssa Daly then both earned walks, with Daly's walk earning an RBI batting in Anthony. Grandizio and Murphy each also scored before the end of the inning as the Macs claimed a 4-0 lead.
Albion scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning, cutting Immaculata's lead to 4-2.
With the bases loaded,
Cat Knoll hit a fielder's choice to third base, scoring
Elena Anglani to increase the Macs' lead to 5-2. Errors by the Britons' defense in the top of the third opened up the chance for the Macs to capitalize on the inning, scoring four additional runs as the Macs owned a commanding 9-2 lead.
After a quiet fourth inning, Knoll hit a single into centerfield in the top of the fifth to score Carter, giving the Macs a 10-2 lead.
The Britons scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but were unable to mount a comeback as the Macs won the game 10-4.
Sarah Guido started the game for the Macs, pitched three innings while allowing two runs.
Maggie Wilkinson, meanwhile, earned the win for the Macs, pitching four innings while allowing two runs on five hits.
Cat Knoll picked up three RBI while going 1-for-4 on the game while
Emma Murphy went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Kaitlyn Carter,
Carly Grandizio, and
Elena Anglani each scored two runs for the Macs as well.
The Macs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first for game two versus New Jersey City.
Kaitlyn Carter kicked off the game for the Macs with a lead-off single into right-center field. Kristen Carter then hit an infield single, advancing her sister to second on the play.
Kaitlyn Carter then advanced to third on a foul-out. Kristen Carter then attempted to steal second but got caught in a rundown. Her rundown did give
Kaitlyn Carter ample time to steal home, giving the Macs a 1-0 lead.
After four scoreless frames, the Gothic Knights scored two runs in the top of the sixth to claim a 2-1 advantage over the Macs. The Mighty Macs responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs highlighted by a two-RBI double for
Kaitlyn Carter, giving the Macs a 4-2 lead going into the seventh.
Unfortunately, the Gothic Knights rallied in the seventh, scoring seven runs on their way to a 9-4 victory against the Macs.
Kaitlyn Carter went 2-for-2 on the game, scoring one run while batting in two runners. She also hit a double and registered two walks. Overall on the day, Carter went 2-for-5, scoring three runs and three RBI while walking four times.
The Mighty Macs now conclude their spring break schedule. The Macs will return to action next Wednesday as they return to Immaculata to host Widener.
