Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match with Wilkes and Wilson

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Immaculata men's volleyball team split their tri-match on Saturday, losing 3-2 to host Wilkes before sweeping Wilson 3-0. The Mighty Macs now stand with a 5-10 overall record on the season.

The Macs began the day with a match against the host, Wilkes. Set one found the Macs and Colonels in a neck-and-neck battle with neither team giving up much ground. The Macs owned the first lead of more than two points when John Bohrer recorded a kill to make the score 16-13. The Colonels responded in kind, making the score 23-20 before the Macs went on a five-point run, securing set one by a score of 25-23.

Wilkes jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in set two, putting Immaculata into an early hole. Immaculata spent a majority of the set working out of the deficit, eventually tying the set at 20-20 on a kill from Jack Debes. Now with momentum, Immaculata outscored Wilkes the rest of the way, securing set two 25-23.

Now with their eyes on the sweep, the Macs took the lead in set three, claiming a 21-18 lead late in the contest. The Colonels, however, went on five-point run, spurring a lead that would result in the third 25-23 decision of the day, this time in favor of the Colonels. The Mighty Macs began to run out of gas in set four against the Colonels, quickly falling into a 9-1 hole. The Colonels capitalized on the lead, forcing a fifth set with a 25-12 set four.

Wilson quickly gained a 9-4 lead in set five, which would suffice as they held the five-point lead, defeating the Macs 15-10 in set five.

John Borher and Garrett Pepper led the Macs on the match with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Pepper also recorded five blocks and 14 digs while John Carter led the Macs with 15 digs.

Next, the Macs faced off against Wilson. Despite match one going to five sets, the Macs jumped right back into action against the Phoenix, taking an early 8-2 lead in set one. Later, the Macs went on a seven-point run to strengthen their lead to 19-6, paving the way for a set one victory 25-12.

The Macs dropped nine straight points before the Phoenix could get on the board in set two. The Mighty Macs continued to execute throughout the set, quickly dispatching the Phoenix in set two 25-6.

Immaculata prevented Wilson from reaching double digits in set three as they jumped to a 12-2 lead early on. Claiming the set 25-9, Immaculata secured the sweep 3-0 against Wilson.

Jack Debes led the Macs offensively with eight kills on the match while Joe Martell led the Macs with 24 assists and 13 digs.

The Mighty Macs will return to action on Friday, March 4th, as they travel to Kean.
