Men's Volleyball Falls in Tri-Match at Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Immaculata men's volleyball team wrapped up their weekend Virginia trip on Saturday as they lost both sides of their tri-match against Southern Virginia and Mount St. Joseph.

The Mighty Macs only managed four kills in set one of their first match against Southern Virginia. After the set stood at 5-4 in favor of the Knights, the Knights began to run away with the set, claiming it by a score of 25-12.

In set two, the Macs worked their way back from an early 6-0 lead, coming within two as the score stood at 12-10. At that point, the Knights regained a strong lead as the score stood at 21-13. The Macs attempted a comeback but were unsuccessful as the set ended 25-18. The Knights claimed a strong 16-7 lead in set three before closing out the series sweep with a 25-15 decision.

Garrett Pepper led the Macs with seven kills on the match while Joe Martell earned 12 assists for the Macs.

The Macs then kicked off game two of the tri-match against Mount St. Joseph. With the score standing at 6-4, the Lions began to incrementally increase their lead, claiming a 19-10 lead that would eventually translate into the 25-16 final score on the set.

Down 15-12 in set two, the macs went on a 6-1 rally to claim an 18-16 lead. With set two going back-and-forth, the Macs held a 24-22 lead when a kill from John Bohrer secured the victory for the Macs in set two 25-22.

The Lions came into set three with a five-point run to claim the early lead. The lead would be sufficient as they would hold it for a majority of the set, claiming set three 25-19. In set four, however, the Macs quickly ran out of gas as the Lions claimed a fast 25-9 victory to secure the 3-1 decision.

Pepper and Bohrer owned nine and eight kills respectively on the set while Jack Debes recorded three blocks on the set for the Mighty Macs.

The Macs will return to action next on Wednesday as they travel to Rosemont for a 7:00 P.M. match.
