IMMACULATA, Pa. – It was a historic return to action for the men's basketball team as the Mighty Macs witnessed three program records be broke in their 92-82 victory over Centenary on Saturday.
Brandon McCullough now owns the program's single-game points scored record along with the career assists records with his 38 points scored and six assists on the night. Meanwhile,
Tyler Tillery set the program's new single-game blocks record with six blocks on the game.
McCullough got to business right away, securing the program assist record on the first point of the game, a layup from
Steven Dao. Following the play, the Macs quickly fell into a hole as the Cyclones took a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes. The Mighty Macs spent the next seven minutes digging themselves out of the hole, taking a 21-19 lead on a jump shot from McCullough. The score went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half as the Macs held a 37-35 lead at the half.
At the half, McCullough led the Macs with 11 points scored along with four rebounds and four assists. Tillery, meanwhile, held down the fort defensively with six rebounds and three blocks, halfway to holding his new record. As a team, the Mighty Macs shot 14-for-36 (38.9%) from the field on the half while the Cyclones went 12-for-34 (35.3%).
The Mighty Macs quickly took command in the second half, scoring eight points in the first 130 seconds of action. Then, over the next four minutes, McCullough dropped three three-pointers while picking up an assist on a three from
Asa Kitchen, taking full control of the game with a 57-42 lead.
While the Cyclones were attempting a comeback,
Tyler Tillery earned his record-breaking sixth block of the game, taking the rebound and going the length of the court to take the layup. The Cyclones, however, would not go down easy, cutting the Macs' lead to 76-70 with 3:45 remaining on the clock.
For the final three and a half minutes, the Macs relied on their veteran core of McCullough, Kitchen, and Tillery to keep the Cyclones at bay, outscoring them 16-12 over the stretch. McCullough made five successful free throws over the final minute of action, securing the single-game points record with 38 total on the game, breaking the previous record of 36 set by Mike Piekarski in 2018.
McCullough led the Macs in historic fashion on the game, scoring 38 points along with seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals on the game. Defensively, Tillery led the Mighty Macs with nine rebounds and six blocks while adding 15 points. Kitchen also aided the Macs with 12 points, five rebounds, and a pair of assists and steals.
The Mighty Macs now open Atlantic East Conference play with a 1-0 record. They will next host Marywood on Monday night for a 7:00 P.M. showdown.
